Is "gate checking" allowed on SAS flights BETWEEN Scandinavian countries?
I'm flying several flights between capital cities in Scandinavia and I'm wondering if I can gate check my luggage at the gate desk instead of the check-in desk.
Most of the flights are on small aircraft so I'm assuming most boarding and deplaning will be from the apron with stairs. The reason for my question is that I carryon a well packed, to TSA standards, bag and would like to reduce the risk of losing my luggage for any of my flights. Although the bag is a carryon, it's too large for the carryon restrictions on the SAS flights I'm taking. I've read all that's available on the SAS site and done several searches and can't find any information. I'd appreciate insight from someone that has done or seen a gate check on SAS flights that are not TATL. Flying SAS: AMS-CPH, CPH-TLL, HEL-ARN, ARN-OSL,OSL-AMS all in 21 days. |
Not to worry. On the small aircraft like CRJ900s they do distribute "delivery at the gate" tags. Before entering the plane, leave your bag by the stairs (or on a carriage), then you will get it back at the stairs before entering the terminal building. I would not ask to "gate check" since in Europe, it is often understood as "check your baggage in the hold" and you will need to claim it with the regular bags in the baggage claims area.

To bit slightly pedantic on a few points of order. The TSA has no rules regarding the size of carry-on, only the airlines do. If it exceeds any given airline's allowed measurements, it is not a carry-on any longer, but a piece of luggage that should be checked, but potentially can be brought to the aircraft. Even if there were a TSA rule, it would have no bearing on a European airline operating in Europe.
That being said, I have very rarely seen sizers in use for SK, probably only in Heathrow. But I have seen judgement of size at the gates followed by weighing. And I have seen items checked for weight, and that usually means items go in the hold. Checking does seem to be more the exception than the rule. |
