Malmo airport

Hi,

How long before would you recommend getting to Malmo airport for a flight, travelling hand luggage only? Is it like Aarhus where 30 mins before is loads of time?

Depends on the flight date/time and whether eligible for priority security screening access at MMX or not. 30 minutes before departure as a hand baggage only passenger without priority security access? That would mean cutting it so close some mornings as to sometimes miss or get close to missing a flight while 35-40 minutes before departure would not. With priority security screening access at MMX, 30 minutes pre-departure works fine for me. Amex Platinum cards provide priority security screening access at MMX.

Do expect the potential to be bored at MMX. :D

I’ve had to be thankful for the priority security access some mornings at MMX only to get bored a week later at the same time for the next 30-40 minutes. Any particular reason you are choosing MMX instead of CPH?

I’ll be in Malmo, and the best solution home was strangely CPH-ARN-EDI.

Just searched Malmo for curiosity and the flight was cheaper, with a 25min later departing flight to make the comfortable connection. will have to leave the office at 240 to make the 1555 flight from Malmo vs 115 ish to make the 1530 from CPH comfortably…

You know Malmo airport is not actually in Malmo, it's like 20-30 minutes drive from Malmo, if you are driving through E65 around 4pm weekdays, expect 10 minutes extra travelling time. There is no public transport going there except taxi and airport bus.

Bag drops only opens 60 minutes before departure for SK at MMX. But they are happy to send you multiple texts saying you better show up early..

If the OP’s coming from near a Flygbussen stop in Malmö to get to MMX, then I can see how it makes sense to fly from MMX between that convenience and the flight schedules at times.

A fixed price journey — if agreeing to that before going —from Malmo to Sturup isn’t a bad deal compared to what some intra-Malmo taxi rides cost, but it takes quite a bit to get me to consider using MMX instead of CPH when coming from Malmo. I even try to avoid Flygbussen when using public transit since Flygussen costs a separate ticket in addition to the public transit system ticket/fare.

Funny you mention taxi. Wasn’t Skanetrafiken (i.e. the southern Swedish public transport company) providing included taxi-on-order service for the final leg of public transport ticket journeys to get to one of the Sturup area hotels when using a Skanetrafiken ticket that covered the zones being traveled?

The first few times I ran into a taxi-included service from Skanetrafiken, I was surprised they had it. I felt sort of bad about using the taxi-included service — when pre-booked with Skanetrafiken — since there was no way they were making money off me given we were doing so with the Skanetrafiken “summer cards” with unlimited Skane regional travel.

I had no idea about Skanetrafiken let you take taxi. We usually drove to MMX as where we used to live door to door from home to MMX was literally 20 mins max. Plus MMX parking is 25% of what CPH charges.

Denmark used to have something like that - when they couldn't find a connection for you. But they quietly cancelled it - it was useful to get to the nearest train station and then to CPH.

Coming from a country with barely any public transport connectivity outside of cities as big as or bigger than Malmo’s size 20 years ago — a country where renting a car and driving myself had long been a better deal than taking a taxi (if the option even existed) —I was impressed the first few times seeing the service from Skånetrafiken when heading out to and from the Swedish boonies.

While getting to MMX is not something I would do with Skånetrafiken even if they were to have a taxi-on-order component, it’s still pretty well connected thanks to Flygbussen for those close to a Flygbussen stop when the bus and flight schedules line up nicely. And Flygbussen is a decent service for what it is if traveling alone or with another person. But if there are three or more people going together, the taxi fare is even more reasonable in relative terms.

Flygbusserna is a monopoly. The price is insane - especially at Kiruna. 110kr one way from the airport to town, literally 10 minutes ride. I'm sure it is still cheaper than taxi because families were also using it.

Does the taxi thing still exist to MMX?

Not sure the Skanetrafiken-covered taxi thing ever went to MMX, but there were indications that it used to get some to or close to a hotel around there.

The Skånetrafiken taxi thing in general? They’ve been on a path of cutting costs and hiking fares so much that they cut it elsewhere at least.

So MMX is very very easy, especially when your colleague drops you off at the door at T-40, zero queue at the baggage desk and there is only one person in front of you at the security queue.

Flight was pretty much full.
