Even Diamonds are being turned away at the gate recently (this autumn) with same day change requests to get on earlier flights if the original booking class is not available.

Yes, it needs to be changed in the app or at the gate using the DCS.

The SAS app used to allow a free SDC within the check-in flow?

This has been a great (unpublished?) benefit that I've used many times during the years. Yesterday I was told at CPH that this is no longer allowed, with a memo having been sent out 3 weeks ago. Apparently you're only allowed to stand-by if your booking class is C, which seems to be a moot point as you're then anyway already able to change to any flight with available seats.

To me this is a great degradation, being able to catch an earlier flight on standby when work ends early has helped many times. For me personally this means I can no longer justify buying a Plus-ticket to my employer, as it has no benefit anymore except that there is no change fee close to departure (but you still have to pay the fare difference, which can be pretty hefty and something you may not have time to do at the airport).

No chance. You need to be EB diamond/Pandion.

Is it possible to same day-change or -standby for a later flight on the same day? :D Having skimmed the previous responses, I assume no; if SAS no longer moves customers to an earlier flight, they would be even less willing to move them later. (I ask because sometimes this is possible. E.g. American allows certain elites to confirm onto a later flight, and United allows any passenger to standby for a later.)

Bit of context: I'm on Plus Smart with a 0.75 day connection in CPH. The onwards is a 7:45am CPH-LHR and I have difficulty in the mornings. :) Though it sounds like CPH has 24 hour subway/bus/train service from the city?

SAS will not allow to standby for later flight. You need to rebook for that.

Just take the metro from the city center - or the train from the central station or one of the other stations in the city center. 20min and you are at the airport; no need to stress about a 7:45am departure.

It is also interesting since SK doesn't consistently book into C even when you book a SAS Plus Pro ticket. These usually book into A and you can't just change to earlier flights even as a Diamond.

I really don't get why EU airlines are so hesitant to enable same day changes. I use this in the US all the time, even between different airports, i.e. Delta lets you change SFO-XXX to same day SJC-XXX and vice versa. I would really appreciate the flexibility this provides.

Oh the issue isn't transportation, it's that I'm not typically an early riser. :) But good to know transportation is easy if I do manage to wake up haha.

Hear hear!
Also, I did not know Delta allowed SDC co-terminaling? Is that official policy?

The difference is European Airlines try to live of being airlines, the US credit card pushers with a side business moving people in planes have less need for the revenue from changes and rebookings. Which is probably why European airlines are less likely to set it all free like the US.

Sounds like EU airlines need to lobby for a reversal on those merchant fee regulations.

That would be an exercise in futility, they would find better uses of their resources.

Now you need a Travel Pass or a decent TA to get booked into C. For some mysterious reason SAS does not want to sell C (the old SAS Full Flex) tickets on their site any more.

Or maybe the Mastercard/visa duopoly could be broken up and those stupid merchant fees could be abolished all together…

I never understood what’s the purpose of those Full Flex tickets compared to a flexible “regular” Pro without change fees? Sure, you get to rebook without paying any fare difference, but that’s basically because you’ve prepaid the most expensive fare class already. They’re usually outrageously more expensive than the Pro version. Is it just the extra points?
