Upgrade using United MileagePlus points
I'm booked in plus EWR-CPH for a flight next year. Its been a while since I've tried this; I'd like to upgrade to business using United points.
I found the form on United's website to request a star alliance upgrade but get "upgrade not available" which I am guessing means SAS has no upgrade inventory at the moment. Do they typically open more up as it gets closer, or once "sold out" is it closed? (in other words - should I be trying again periodically?) Thanks Matt |
Are you booked in Y, B or S? If you're in
I believe the upgrade inventory is the same as awards (booking class I), which do some times appear when people cancel or closer to departure if the loads are low. If you can set up an alert through ExpertFlyer or similar, otherwise yes, monitor it, You don't specify when, EWR can be tough for business awards some times, while really easy other times such as in off season winter months. |

Sorry, I got B twice in my answer. B is indeed eligible. Keep monitoring for I (award) space, otherwise there is plusgrade or upgrading at the gate.

Yes, using MileagePlus points is almost impossible, but the cash deals on plusgrade or at the gate are often attractive. If you use plusgrade, you will likely earn more points on MileagePlus. If you upgrade at the gate, you only earn points for the original booking class. Many people here, try plusgrade first, and the gate later if the former fails.

I have a short flight from MAN to CPH in Y and was intrigued by the 10k United miles to upgrade. What is the fee to upgrade? Also would I just call SAS to process the upgrade? I currently do not have a coach seat assignment.

Furthermore it Would be a waste as the only difference is a light meal in the form of a "cube", stuff from the cart and priority boarding. Not sure if there's *G track in MAN? if you really want to be in plus, you Should look into plusgrade. And the *A upgrade process would've went through MilagePlus, not sas, and it'd require availability in the I clasd bucket |

I don't think you'd be able to do it, as the required booking classed for *a upgrades (Y,B&S) are already in plus which is the highest cabin on this route.
