Still have a certificate for flying the Polar route through Anchorage to Tokyo in the early seventies, should have two but have only come across one recently. It could have been three but SAS pulled the route for a while when the US Government wanted visas for transit passengers going through Anchorage, went the Southern route stopping off at nearly every country between Japan and Denmark, almost 24 hours on one plane.

It was only a 747-200, so a couple of stretches shorter than the 747-8, and with the small upper deck with the spiral staircase in the nose It is only about 10 seats less than Lufthansa does in their 747-400 refurbished without first class.
And PS, the 747-8 does not seat 600+

Main difference is probably the balance between premium cabin and economy class, plus the fact that the premium cabin seats did not have anywhere near the space that they have today.
