SAS 909 delayed

Hi everyone,

my girlfriend and I are currently sitting in CPH and SK909 from CPH to EWR is delayed for a minimum of 5 1/2 hours.

Since this is our first encounter with a delayed plane, we do not really know what to do at all, so ... suggestions?

EWR is our final destination.

/Edit: We have been offered two meal vouchers and I have issued a request at SAS ServiceHotline via flysas.com/feedback to ask, how we get a compensation.

/Edit2: The agent in the lounge told us, that every other connection is "fully booked". We are booked in PremiumEco (Class B).

I doubt you can do more. Enjoy some restaurant at CPH or buy yourself access to the ASPIRE (or Apaprtment) lounge, if you hate the open spaces of CPH. No good food in lounges, but less tiring waiting conditions.

In any case you need to go back to the Schengen area, I believe (if you left it already).

Sounds like a reasonable approach from SK. Did they say reason for delay?

Thanks for the input @ all.

The plane had an engine issue and was taken out of service (or the fix will take too long).
I was told that we are currently waiting for the plane incoming from Tokyo to land, be cleaned and prepared as our replacement plane.

Just a few more questions:

Regarding the compensation: How does this work? Is creating an issue at flysas.com the correct way to do so? I haven´t recieved a response with a tracking number or something like this.

Regarding the flight itself: Are there any tips of how to get an upgrade? I heard a lot of J passengers being rebooked with FI via KEF or with SAS via IAD, so there must be some empty seats available. And, if we use the plane from Tokyo, its a 343 which has 12 J seats more than our broken 333 ...
The SK assistants in the lounge just told me, that no J seat is available at all (even for purchase).

Our status at the moment: We "enjoyed" some burgers and are back in the SAS lounge to get some (non alcoholic) drinks to wash the burgers down ... ;)

When i flew CPH-SFO in December with a buddy of mine our direct flight was cancelled and we were re-routed via IAD (i think) and we were delayed a total of 6 hours. I wrote sas via sas.dk/feedback and they issued a 600€ compensation pr person for us.

OK, we arrived in NYC with a total delay of 5 hours:

Planned departure was 12:20 CET
Actual departure was 18:05 CET
Planned arrival was 15:15 EST
Actual arrival was 20:15 EST

The flight itself was good, seats were good and the crew was in fact one of the best we enjoyed in recent years. Always smiling, funny and very attentive.

How long does it normally take for SAS to answer our "feedback"? I found some posts or blogs online, that said, that SAS (among other companys) tend to ignore those compenstations and that one might consider talking to a lawyer about that. Is that really necessary?

I never had any issues with SAS denying compensation if it was clearly not e.g. a weather related problem. I usually got the money in my bank in 2 to 4 weeks.

When i wrote SAS me and my buddy were sitting in the lounge in CPH waiting for the departure. When we landed in IAD there was a response SAS asking us if we wanted 600€ Cash per person or 1200€ Travel Vouchers per person. We opted for the cash and after a few weeks the total amount was in my account.

Dont know if the quick response had something to do with my EBG status

SAS answered and they offered us a 600 Euro travel voucher for my girlfriend and me.
I do not really have a use for that, because there will be no opportunity to use it in a year.

SAS states, that they are obligared to pay compensation, when the delay is avoidable and that in our case, however, this condition is not adequately met.

Attached to the mail is the Reasoncode for the plane and the delay that day.

FlightIDs: SK 0909 , Period: 08MAR14-08MAR14
ADHOC CHANGE: EQT REASON: DAMA
TC - AIRCRAFT CHANGE FOR TECHNICAL REASONS
SI: DUE DENT ENG COWLING LN-RKH

Question: Why is that not a delay that must be regulated according the EU-Rules?

fassy Mar 17, 2014 8:34 am

Plane going tech is usually not considered extraordinary circumstance. Reply back to them and ask them to pay out the compensation.

I guess they hope that a large numbers of customers will be happy with the vouchers and only pay out those who complain.

Askartus Mar 17, 2014 2:05 pm

Just asked kindly, if they are able to pay out.

Since we are not going to do non-business flying the next months (well, all flights scheduled are payed), the voucher is kind of wasted because it is limited for one year.

Askartus Mar 22, 2014 6:45 pm

SAS does not want us to fly with them.

1. We are still waiting for an answer about the compensation (The agent answered my, that she "had to ask the technical department" - I do not really know why)
2. We are currently sitting in ORD and waiting for the ... drumroll please .. next delayed SAS flight!

SK 944 from ORD to CPH is delayed for at least 40 minutes since the inbound plane from CPH (SK 943) is delayed for about 3-4 hours. This is very bad for us since we are connecting (on one ticket though) to DUS and had the minimum connection time of 45 minutes ...

I do love flying in a plane but SAS make it very hard to enjoy this one ...

fassy Mar 23, 2014 2:36 am

Don't worry... they will catch up such a small delay and even if not there are two more direct flights to DUS at SK627 at 17:05 and SK629 at 20:45.

But I understand your frustration....

If they don't answer back by end of them week remind them.

Askartus Mar 23, 2014 10:29 am

We just arrived in Cologne - the flight from Chicago did indeed landed on time (the pilot found another gear, I suppose). But our luggage is still in CPH ...

But at least we arrived just in time.
And the flights itself were quite enjoyable!
