Aircraft cost a lot of money to own and operate, no airline has spare aircraft just sitting around... especially not SAS with their precarious financial situation.

SAS do have backup planes. That is the big advantage with having an old fleet, the aircrafts do not have any book value. So the only cost is the operating cost and maintenance. Every major airline needs to have some backup planes in case of trouble with other aircrafts.

For example, I know that OY-KHU was used as a backup plane the three first weeks of september. The backup planes have to step in very often. So when you see a cancellation it probably means that all backup planes are in use.

Well, the old(er) aircraft need a ton of servicing and consume more fuel, which explain the rapid retirement programme on the MD fleet. OY-KHU is an odd one: they keep storing it and retrieving it from storage, while really ancient MD82s are merrily flying around.

The backup plane issue depends on the day of the week and hour. During off-peak hours it makes economic sense operate less short-haul flights.

There are no designated backup-planes. However at certain times there is a little slack in the schedules that allow for quick swaps if necessary.
At peak hours the slack is minimal.

Problens with SAS aircraft gave weekend cancellations
16-10-2012
Problems with three CRJ-900 aircraft forced SAS to cancel more than 20 flights on Sunday and Monday.
BY ANDREAS HOOK
SAS had the weekend to take three CRJ-900 aircraft out of production and drive them into the hangars for repair. It was not planned and led to cancellations of flights.
.
"We've had some technical problems the mixed nature of the three aircraft. And it has unfortunately led to cancellations Sunday and Monday, "says Trine Kromann-Mikkelsen, press officer at SAS.
.
It was among other problems with the so-called "flaps" and "slats" on aircraft wings, as mechanics worked with.
.
Had not pilots
20 flights were canceled Sunday and a simple had to be canceled Monday, despite the fact that SAS had actually larger MD-80 aircraft standing ready on land, which could have acted standby.
.
"We had MD-80 aircraft in standby to be deployed instead. But we did not have pilots and cabin crew to man the planes, "explains Trine Kromann-Mikkelsen.
.
Monday afternoon was all CRJ-900 aircraft on the wings again.
.
As a replacement for Q400 aircraft
SAS operates 12 CRJ-900 aircraft, which seats 88 passengers. The planes are primarily used on feeder routes from Scandinavia and Northern Europe into Copenhagen and is the smallest aircraft in the SAS 'own fleet.
.
The aircraft were purchased to replace the Dash-8 Q400 aircraft, which SAS chose to discard after three episodes of landing frames and emergency landings within a short time. Both the CRJ-900 and Q400 aircraft are manufactured by the Canadian aircraft manufacturer Bombardier.

Adding a A-340 for next summer

Leased from LAN

SAS investing in additional long-haul
21-12-2012
To guard against a repeat of this summer's massive problems with long-haul aircraft, SAS has decided to hire an additional Airbus A340 long-haul aircraft in the summer of 2013. It will be the company's 12th long-haul.
BY ANDREAS HOOK
From 1 June next year, SAS 'current 11 long-haul aircraft be joined by a 12th aircraft that SAS has just decided to lease in the summer traffic program the 2013th The plane is an Airbus A340-300 aircraft similar to those that SAS already has seven. The four other long-haul Airbus A330-300.
.
The decision to take an extra flight into the long-haul fleet for the summer program is a direct consequence of the major problems that SAS experienced this summer. A streak of bad luck meant that the company was forced to cancel a number of long-haul flights in a period from late June to late August. Exactly in this period is particularly U.S. planes filled well up because of summer holidays.

The irregularities affected more than 40 flights and up to 10,000 passengers.

Therefore, selected SAS also in several cases to hire an additional plane. A Boeing 777-machine thus took several trips from Copenhagen to Washington and back again. But it was a very expensive solution to get a plane at very short notice in the middle of high season.
.
SAS has therefore chosen to protect themselves by having a spare aircraft available.
.
"Part of this summer's traffic on long routes could have been settled less annoying for passengers, if we had had more capacity. Therefore, we have decided to hire a reserve plane. In addition, our Airbus A330 aircraft painted over the summer, and it's good to have extra capacity, "explains Trine Kromann-Mikkelsen, press officer at SAS.
.
Only vikarfly
SAS has not yet settled on how sædekonfigurationen will be in the new aircraft. While most of SAS's current A340 aircraft offers 46 Business Class seats, 28 Economy Extra seats and 171 Economy seats, then the new aircraft today in the work of Chilean LAN 42 business class seats and 222 Economy seats. Business Class seats are flat beds that are not available on SAS 'own aircraft. About SAS keep the aircraft current seat configuration or make room for Economy Extra is not defined yet.
.
The aircraft must not fly on fixed routes, but only inserted when there is a need for a substitute teacher. It is SAS 'own pilots and cabin crew who will fly the plane and serve passengers.
.
Four years older
Aircraft registration letters CC-CQG and flies currently the LAN. It has a history of Air Canada's colors and came into the world at the Airbus factory in Toulouse, France, in 1997. This is the plane four years older than the oldest of SAS 'own Airbus A340 aircraft.
.
CC-CQG is one of LAN's four Airbus A340-300 aircraft. The company expects to have got rid of the planes in 2016, where they will be replaced by new Boeing 787'ere which LAN has already received the first copies.

Saw that too. This could turn into Lotto with winners and loosers. Flatbeds for Business Class - but plain ecnomy for Economy Extra!

Nice move though - did not see that comming. As I did not see BKK returning after summer.

All the best for the holidays

Flew LAN last summer to/from Santiago in C-class.
Very nice hard product , with very comfortable seats where you can get a good snooze. Much better than current SK C-class product.
