Hotel Monaco

I am looking to visit San Francisco for the first time and my airline has what seems to be an unbelievable deal of £645 for 6 nights. The hotel looks lovely on the internet but they always do, dont they?:) Has anyone here stayed at the Monaco?

I have relatives who stayed there recently and loved it. They researched it on Tripadvisor.com before and felt it lived up to the great reviews there. It is very conveniently located too.

This is a kimpton hotel part of a group of boutique properties. I have always had a nice stay at their properties but have found on premises offerings like the restaurant to be overpriced

thanks both- have actually just gone ahead and booked it now. I am looking forward to my first trip to San Francisco in October.

The hotel is nice. Make sure you don't walk west at night. You'll be getting into an area called the Tenderloin.

In general the area is fine but I wouldn't be walking about at 3am on Ellis/Taylor.

Other than that, you're very centrally located and walking distance to the main shopping hub.

thanks- someone mentioned that area to me in another forum. Whenever we are in a city that is a bit unsafe at night we tend to take a taxi to be on the safe side. Better safe than sorry.

it's very nice

The Tenderloin is a goofy place - Geary itself near the theaters etc (where you'll be) is fine but one or two blocks either way are nasty.

The Grand Cafe, the hotel's resto, is quite pricey but very nice. Their pre-theater dinners are a good deal.

The hotel itself as many Kimpton hotels do has a wine tasting in the afternoons.

I like the idea of the wine tasting:)

Can't believe I didn't follow up on this thread.
I loved the Monaco. Its well worth popping in just to look at it- very original. Loved the wine receptions they had every night.
We ate there one night and it is a very popular place. Location was perfect. I have to say that I was actually a bit disappointed in Fisherman's Wharf and so was glad we hadn't opted to stay near there. I did however, love watching
seals- could happily have watched them for hours:)
