Serrano Hotel?
 

Anyone know how close this is to Downtown, Chinatown, etc? Have heard bad things about this place but it is listed as a 4*

The location is excellent for doing things (a few mins' walk to Union Sq, right near the SF Hilton) - BUT it is right on the eastern side of the "Tenderloin" neighborhood which gets very very seedy within a block to the west

I love the Serrano! Operated by the Kimpton Group, so small, boutique style property in an older building. Rooms are a bit on the small side, but very nice. The restaurant, Ponzu, does great drinks and appetizers, but I don't think dinner is as good. It is true that it is on the border of a bad neighborhood, but nothing to worry about. The doormen can easily direct you to Union Square, etc. Easy walk to Chinatown, too. I'd definitely stay there.
