Feedback Requested - Handlery Hotel at Union Square
My wife and I will be visiting S.F. 7/22 - 7/26 this summer. It will be the end of our two week vacation in CA. We are thinking of staying at the Handlery Hotel at Union Square. Anyone have any recent experience with this hotel?
Our General Criteria Include: Prefer Average to Larger size rooms (225+ square feet). Had a bad experience in Hawaii with a very tiny room (probably <= 150 Square Feet) Double Bed was adjacent to the wall and there was barely space to walk between it and the furniture. Miniscule bathroom. Fortunately it was only for one night. Hoping not to make a similar mistake in SF. Must be a non-smoking room. Like to have a mini refrigerator and coffee maker in the room Don't care about room service, concierge services, etc. Prefer <= $150 night (plus tax). Will consider going upto $175 plus tax for S.F. Don't like Priceline/Hotwire type sites. Even though many people seem to get very good rates this way, you really don't have full control over your own destiny. I am willing to pay more to have that control. Prefer A/C or ceiling fans at a minimum. For S.F. are other criteria include: Don't care abort parking since we won't have a car in S.F. Prefer Union Square Area but would also consider Fisherman's Wharf. For Union Square Area don't want to be on the border of the Tenderloin (i.e Hotel Nikko, Hilton, etc.). Pool is a very nice, but not required extra. Handlery appears to meet all of the above quite well. Thanks in advance for any and all feedback. Jon & Becky Maiman |
You might want to try the Grand Hyatt Union Sq. The rates can be very reasonable and I think it meets most, if not all, of your criteria.

The Handlery location is excellent - but there is a major downstairs renovation going on (I have walked by it several times and noticed this.) You may want to find out when it is scheduled to be finished (and then add a few weeks......)
For that time of year, I'd recommend reserving some sort of cancellable rate now and then in the days before the trip, check on more upscale hotels - if rooms aren't-a-movin, you may get $129 to $159 or so at top quality (but not luxury) hotels (St. Francis, Palace, SF Hilton). |
maybe i'm wrong, but does this hotel have a big H in green as its logo? and is relatively close to the hilton downtown sf? if it is, the place looks quite old and from the outside at least looked more like a 2.5-3*. maybe i am wrong though.
