Post Department of Homeland Security officers are patrolling BART

Uniformed Department of Homeland Security officers seen patrolling BART trains and stations Tuesday are members of a Transportation Security Administration team, according to BART officials.

Photos posted to social media, including a tweet by Janice Li, a San Francisco local running for the Bay Area Rapid Transit Board of Directors, show a line of at least eight armed, uniformed DHS officials walking in the aisle among seated passengers on a train bound for the Civic Center BART station in San Francisco.

Article says they're patrolling with BART officers. I'd be a little worried if they were out there on their own as there are some very special procedures involved to stop trains or drop the power to the third rail, something that's done pretty frequently when people get on the tracks.

Possibly because of dream force?

Possibly because of dream force? With all the problems with the bay area transit center, traffic and such maybe they need some extra help and are expecting that there may be some problems?

I've seen DHS police on other cities municipal railways. Usually they're prevelent during major events whether sporting or major conferences. I'd assume they're assisting BART Police during Dreamforce. At the end of the day they're just police officers and not entirely sure why people were shocked.

My guess is also that they're here because of the large crowds expected at Dreamforce. IME west coast public transit doesn't have the visible police presence that east coast public transit often has (and when they do have a presence it's usually local officers, not federal ones). Obviously East and West Coast cities had very different experiences of 9/11, and have put in different types of security procedures. (I was a bit shocked a few years ago when after arriving at JFK and transferring to the NY subway, having a police officer randomly pull me over to swab my bag, hands, and phone like the TSA before letting me go through the turnstile. Would be very much out of the norm in SF, but perhaps makes sense in NYC).

I've seen some on the ferries. BART makes a lot more sense to me than the ferries.
