SFO or OAK?

Will be flying from San Francisco to San Diego next March. Can go from SFO or OAK. Is Oakland more reliable in terms of weather? Or if the fog comes in does it affect Oakland too. Will be accessing via BART from downtown so both similar to get to.

OAK generally does not experience weather delays. OAK generally does not experience congestion delays.

Much of the discussion in this older thread in the Southwest Airlines | Rapid Rewards forum is still valid:

OAK is less prone to weather delays than SFO. When I choose which to fly out of I consider the potential for delays as one factor in my decision. The other primary factors are price, schedule, and time/cost of ground transportation.

A few minor factors are access to food in the airport (better at SFO except for Southwest) and ease of parking (OAK has onsite long-term parking that's walkable to the terminals).

Thanks for your replies. Looks like I'll try OAK as price is the same and schedules similar.

Next March is a REALLY long time away. Tickets for a SAN - Bay Area run are usually cheapest about 6 weeks out. Southwest is not even selling tickets for next March yet.

Unless the tickets you are looking at are $50, wait on buying them.

I appreciate its a long way off but I've just booked my international flights into SFO so am trying to be organised.

If you are looking at BART, you should be aware that it's rather fiddly getting to OAK on BART as you have to change trains for a little shuttle train which takes you to the last stop. On the other hand, SFO is so much bigger an airport that it's quite likely you'll end up on the shuttle train which takes you to the different terminals at SFO.

I think you will find SFO to be a nicer all-round experience and it is quite a good airport as US airports go, but this seems like a decision which will be based on price.

I'd give youself a 5-6 hour window between the domestic flight and the international one. Inter-Cal flights are the most delay prone.

The trip between OAK and SFO averages out to about an hour (or more) or so, no matter if you take BART or a car.
