ok sound like a plan.. but am not sure if my wife can ride for a long distance..

we return the bikes in Sausalito? or we return them with us on the ferry?

It'll be rather cold then. I'd just take the ferry both ways.

The bike ride from SF to Sausalito is several miles (depending where you rent the bikes) with elevation change...many tourist struggle with the ride and end up walking/pushing the bikes.

You can bring the bikes on the ferry. Most companies allow you to drop off the bikes at their various locations in SF. I don't think the companies have a location in Sausalito.

While I strongly recommend this bike rental idea generally, it does not sound like it would work for the OP and his wife. As you say, there are hills along the route; it's not a tough ride, but it's not easy, either.

I'd recommend the ferry in both directions. Check the schedules: http://www.oursausalito.com/sausalit...sausalito.html
Note the two different routes to/from Sausalito (Fisherman's Wharf and the Ferry Building).

Should we book in advance for the ferry?

You cannot reserve a spot on the ferry, just buy a ticket from the machine and line up. Bike space sometimes fills up but pedestrian space is plentiful.

Ferry would be the easiest, and it's a nice ride.

As VickiSoCal said, no worries on getting aboard the ferry. The ride will be very scenic unless it's stormy or very foggy.

That's a matter of perspective. I moved to San Francisco from Wisconsin 25 years ago. I have yet to experience cold here.

Another vote for the ferry. It's fairly cheap and you get stunning views of the bay. Plus it departs pretty regularly and you're dropped off right downtown in Sausalito.

Based upon his posting history, the OP is from a much warmer clime than Wisconsin or San Francisco.
