1 Day MR in SJC / San Jose - what to do?
I am arriving SJC late AM and staying overnight at an airport hotel. What suggestions for spending the afternoon using public transportation? I don't want to bother with a rental car.

Relocated to the San Francisco (which encompasses the S F Bay Area) for better exposure and assistance from other members.

P.S. There's a lot to do, and there's easy access to public transport. Perhaps sharing some of your interests and hobbies would help others help you?

Most of the airport hotels are near the light rail stop. You can take the light rail to downtown San Jose and visit the art museum as well as the rather tired science museum. The art museum currently has a show of paintings by Eric Fischl. Not terribly much more to see or do in downtown San Jose IMO.

I thought about that but with the need to take the free shuttle from the light rail/hotel area to the Caltrain station, combined with the ride on the train, you are probably looking at 2+ hours each way (probably even if you catch one of the fastest trains, which don't run mid-day when the OP arrives).

Check out the lounge at the DeAnza hotel downtown. They often have good jazz groups or other first rate entertainment.
The lobby of the Fairmont is an enjoyable place to have a drink.
Check out the SJ Mercury or entertainment websites to see if there are any good shows or concerts - there are quite a few venues downtown - HP Pavilion, SJ Civic Center, SJ Center for Performing Arts, SJ State Event Center, California Theater.
If you do go to San Francisco, the Asian Art Museum has one of the most spectacular exhibits in years - the 2000 year old Chinese Terra Cotta Warriors.
