Don't listen to Juan. He'll get you all hyped up on caffiene and send you on a mule ride down Lombard Street ("Crookedest Street in the World"). :D

What? No mention of riding the cable cars? SF's #1 cheap (at least sort of) things to do for tourists.
Followed by a stop at the Buena Vista (at the Aquatic Park cable car terminal) for Irish Coffee. |

Hello,
My friends from California told me they never tip in California, so I'm not sure what the proper etiquette is... How much should I tip for the following services? - Taxi - Free airport shuttle service provided by the hotel - Luggage hold at the hotel Airport shuttle: $0-1/person (depending on service) Luggage: $0-1/bag (depends on my mood) Sit-down restaurants: 15-20% (except in SF where health insurance fee gets subtracted from tip) Non sit-down restaurants: depends... usually coins into the tip jar if paying with cash |

When I rode the cable car 3 weeks ago, the paying system was kind of funky. We got on at the start of the route, so they made us pay $5 (which we didn't have problem with until later...). However, when people started getting on, none of them paid! It was kind of like why didn't we get on the cable car two streets later and not pay a cent? This happened all four times we used it so I was wondering if there was a set system.

I asked about the places to go, because we only have one afternoon to explore. I went to Japan town and that was a bust, because there didn't seem to be anything to do there. We went to Pier 39 and Ghirardelli Square.. and then nothing. haha. I hope to make this time more eventful, and I'm going with a different group of friends. As for things to do in S.F., if you give an indication of what types of things you're into, I am sure we can provide many suggestions right up your alley. There is a lot to do in S.F. But different strokes for different folks . . . . |

sometimes they don't collect CC Fares
and yeah it's annoying. But sometimes it is regulars on the route that the conductor knows have fastpasses.
I echo the votes for Haight St - lots of cafes, cheap restaurants, fun shops, close to the park (altho at that end it's full of homeless drunks) . If you are more into art the new De Young in the park is pretty great - and if you just want to ride to the observation deck at the top it's free (but then you don't see any of the art) |
BTW, don't call it "Cali" when you visit. That marks you as a tourist because nobody who lives here calls it that.
In a similar vein, don't call the city "Frisco". Frisco is a Dallas suburb. Locals here call it "San Fran" or "Ess Eff". If you call it "Frisco" you will sound like a retard-- or worse, a Texan. :p |
