How and when to best switch partner programs on e-Miles?

Can anyone advise on the best steps and timing for switching from one partner program to another if you're doing e-Miles already? I have close to the 500 point level with Northwest as my mileage partner, but want to switch over to the new offer I just received from HHonors (I guess they are new to e-Miles..). Should I wait till just after I pass the 500 point level I'm close to or just after the points have gone over to Northwest? I would have preferred starting to earn with HHonors immediately but it looks like I might lose all my existing points if I tried to switch over right away now - is that correct? Also, do you have to completely re-register with e-Miles when you change your earning program? Thanks!

I changed my preferred airline from Delta to CO a while ago. I waited until I reached the 500 point redemption level before switching. Here are the instructions I received from e-miles, circa November 2007:

To properly change your account, please follow the steps below:

STEP 1 – Cancel your current account

To cancel your current account with e-Miles, log in to www.e-Miles.com using your primary e-mail address and password. After logging in, select “Account” from the top menu bar, followed by “Cancel Membership” from the left-hand navigation. You will then be required to enter your log in information again, complete and submit the online form to confirm your cancellation request.

NOTE: Once you have cancelled your membership, any e-Miles miles earned that have not already been deposited to your preferred frequent flyer account will be lost.

STEP 2 – Re-enroll with your selected sponsor

Please go to www.e-Miles.com and enroll as a new member under your selected charter sponsor using your primary e-mail address. You will need to go through the entire enrollment process and complete all the profiles to properly set up your account and earn your enrollment miles.

Thanks again for being part of the program

I don't know if it's the best/only way, but I'm waiting for my NW miles to post, then will cancel membership and re-register as HHonors... assuming I ever get the email. :(

boxo, I don't think you'll have to wait for the invite by email, HHonors will probably just be listed there in the emiles registration pages as one of their participants when you re-register. This is sooo long ago that I initially registered however that I'm not hundred percent sure of my facts anymore...
