Oreck iron offer

So I need a new Iron and I remember seeing those late night ads from Oreck for a free Iron when you test out their Vacuum. So I called them up and told them I have no interest in their vacuum and I just wanted the free Iron. I told them that if I ordered the vacuum i wouldn't even use it and would send it back the same day I got it. So...can you please just send me the iron, it will save you the shipping (they pay for it both ways) and the labor cost. The agent said no.

Has anyone ever had any experience just getting the iron or am I forced to order the vacuum and send it back when I get it?

I think you might be confusing the reason for the offer.
The general idea is to offer you the iron to get you to try the vacuum.
What you are suggesting that all people should have to do is call them and request a free iron without trying out the vacuum.

So, the idea is that you will get the vacuum, try it, and keep it.

Additionally, part of it is the hassle factor. That is, if you are on the wall about whether you want to keep the vacuum, then the hassle of returning it might cause you to keep it.

Why not just try it? Apparently it won't cost you anything anyway.

Heck, maybe you'll LOVE it...

BTW, you're a guy and you find it neccesary to iron things?! Obviously you never dormed! :D

Actually, I am a student and live in a dorm. I have no need for a vacuum and no where to put it. I like have pressed shirts and need to where them to work.

I understand the point of the promo is to get me to try the vacuum, just like the "test drive the new XYZ and get a $50 gift card" is to try and get you to buy a car but if you go to the dealership and say, "I don't want, need, or have the money to buy a new car I am just here to get the $50. I don't want to waist your time making a pitch can I just have the $50 and leave? the answer is almost always yes.

Isn't that the same type of reasoning that they used in the last episode of "My Name is Earl"?

He was caught up stealing from a store, and explains to the cop, "I am not stealing, these are buy one get one free, so I am just taking the free ones"

:D

You can buy an iron for $7.99 on amazon (really, just looked), there's really no need to be bothering with trying to get one for free.

chefcaw Jan 15, 2007 10:46 am

The spam mail is not worth the free iron IMHO

Get engaged and have a wedding shower. That is how I got my iron for free. Of course then you also have a nonreturnable spouse.

Dear Mr. Dorm (college) student:
nowhere (one word), wear (not where), waste (not waist). Just in case you have job applications in the future, remember to proof everything.

Just buy a friggin iron. They're not expensive.

I'm all for a bargain, but your actions with the car dealer and your desire to do the same with Oreck is basically blackmail. "Give me something so I'll go away and not bother you".

Your sense of entitlement saddens me. Buy yourself an iron!

ClimbGuy Jan 15, 2007 8:53 pm

entitlement?

People test drive cars or get trials of this or that to get the 'free item' all the time. Many of them have no interest in the car, vacuum or w/e. I am one of those people. I tried to save them the cost and labor of shipping the vacuum out only to get it back the next day. Most people wouldn't bother with that and just order it and send it back.

Most sales staff at dealerships are happy with your honest because it saves the the time and effort which could be better spent with a real customer.

MollyNYC Jan 15, 2007 11:59 pm

You're right, entitlement was the wrong word.

It's simply dishonesty and it's still blackmail....."I'll be a PITA and purposefully cost you money unless you fork over free stuff".

We all love a bonus, a freebie. But asking Oreck to send you a free iron or else you'll order the vacuum and return it is simply wrong. You really don't see that?
