Locally (Boston area), you can have your knives sharpened at the Cambridge Culinary Institute for $1/blade. Still a great deal

perfect. got a nice knife set 11 years ago for wedding. :D Held edge pretty good all of these years and was just now looking for a reasonable why to get them sharpened. :) :)

Thanks!

Turns out there's one close to me. Who knew? Guess that's why they do these promos.

This was a great deal ^ Took in our three knives and got them sharpened ~~~ they did an amazing job! Like having brand new knives :) Offer still valid thru the 30th.

Definitely worth the effort to locate one of these stores. After our knives were done, the saleslady offered us espresso from an $800 espresso maker, the kind that uses coffee pods so you don’t have all that mess afterward. I marvel at how stores like Sur La Table create desires in me I didn’t know I had. Although I’m not much of a cook, in a store like this, I think I could be.

Sweet, I've needed my Global knife sharpened for awhile since I don't have the right sharpener for it. Thanks for posting the find.

Be sure to read the fine print:

Throughout April, have up to three knives* professionally sharpened at any of our stores.

While you’re here, explore our extensive selection of sharpening tools to keep your knives perfectly honed the rest of the year. *Some restrictions apply; we are unable to sharpen damaged/serrated/ceramic knives and scissors. Additional knives sharpened for $1/inch. See store for complete details. Offer ends April 30, 2006.
Not to rain on the parade, but keep in mind that while a claim in the advertisement states that they offer "professional" sharpening, it's just a regular store employee doing the work. They do get some training, and some are better at it than others. But that doesn't make them professionals in any sense, simply becuase they get paid to do the service.

When I had cheap knives and I was broke, it was okay. Now that I've got a real set, I take 'em to a cutlerly dealer where they have a true craftsman on site. I pay $2.50 per knife (not per inch, which is outrageous), with the serrated knives and cook's scissors costing just a little more. I'd rather not take the chance of getting my knives back with too thin or too blunt/chipped cutting edges. Consider the deal before committing your good knives to possible irreversible damange. @:-)

rain away :td:
Hate to refute you but the one I went to in LI was a cutlerly dealer selling knives as expensive as your first car.
They use a professional calibrated machine to sharpen knives..just as good as the priofessional service that roams every few months in my neighborhood "Bob' Grinding Service" and he has been doing it for years and is very good.

 You're refuting ... who?? Me or the OP? Or refuting that I pay $2.50 per knife for machine-calibrated sharpening??? Your post isn't making sense ...

2-day turnaround

Dropped off some knives at the SoHo store. Store employee wrote up the work order with no problem (marking '0' on the total line). Normal turn-around time for knife sharpening is 2 business days, which I didn't know (I thought the knives would be sharpened on the spot). On the way out, I was also offered (and accepted) an espresso from one of their $499 Espresso machines.
Now let's see how sharp my knives will be when I get them back!
