They know.
I suspect there are many things they look at, and one of them is probably the sequence of clicks. If you didn't get to page A by clicking on something in page B, they can get very unhappy.

O.K. gotcha Mark. Still mystifies me why there are different offers visible to different users at The same time. Why can't I view what everyone does? :(

It's called targeted marketing. Gets them the most bang for their advertising buck.
