I started a thread about six months ago that might provide some useful options:

In addition, I believe that Sharebuilder has a point bonus for some airlines for opening a new account, including IRAs. At least they had a promotion like this last fall during the USAirways Grand Slam. The bonus offered then for USAirways was 2500 miles.

In general, bonuses are not allowed on retirement accounts, for tax reasons. Please don't argue or try to pursue the logic or illogic of it, it is what it is.

Perhaps the difference is that the bonus is paid as an additional deposit into the account. That is, it could be considered "bonus interest" or some such thing. That's very different than something such as miles paid to the account holder but outside of the retirement account.

Thanks for asking this, thebat.
Like redtop43 and probably others, I also thought that IRAs were generally exempt from bonuses and other offers. Glad to see that's not the case.
Thanks mia and needtoescape for your responses! very helpful.

Transfer to Fidelity, Vanguard , Schwab...
I know that I can earn miles opening bank/checking accounts for miles, but I am looking to rollover 80-100k in Ira's and funds to take advantage of the cheaper costs at these 3 firms. Does anyone know of a way to earn miles doing this? Thanks

JRV62's question has been appended to a similar discussion from 2011. Reviewing those posts will help explain the regulatory restrictions on offering rewards for retirement accounts.

On BOA's front page was an offer for up to $600 to rollover into a new account. May only be $100 for under $100k.

None that I've seen. I'd personally take the $300 as an exchange for 25k aa miles though (like fidelity offers). Plus Ira are much easier to move around since you generally don't take the short term gains tax hit.
