Ryanair: cuts STN by 14%, DUB by 18%

Ryanair imposes Stansted cuts

Ryanair is to cut capacity from its man UK hub airport of Stansted in the winter.

The number of weekly flights is to drop by 14%, resulting in 900,000 fewer passengers being carried.

The no-frills carrier is to reduce the number of flights from the airport from more than 1,850 to less than 1,600.

The number of aircraft based at the Essex airport will be cut by a quarter or eight aircraft, down to 28 from 36.

The carrier blamed high oil prices, the cost of using Stansted and an alleged failure by the Civil Aviation Authority to control costs for airlines using the airport.

The announcement follows a planned trimming of winter flights by 18% from Dublin.

When Ryanair are doing this, you know its going to be a tough winter... it does make me wonder how Aer Arann, Aer Lingus, Jet2, FlyBE are doing (mind you, for all O'Leary's bluster about a bloodbath (again) these are pretty swingeing cuts from FR, so maybe they're feeling the pain more. I mean if no is booking flights when you're charging £0.01 WITH TAXES where do you go from there?)

Sure, the demand for flights could be really low but you also have to remember that there are costs associated with flying and AFAIK Ryanair do not hedge their fuel costs which would be a massive blow to their finances as things are happening right now.

Makes sense. Shift the planes that you are keeping in operation to the destinations where people want to go during the winter. I'm guessing that more vacationers want to go to the beach than Krakow in November.

They have stopped the STN-SZG route for 6 weeks in Nov and Dec.

That is only one of six stations that they are closing for those six weeks. The locations that are closing up are Basel, Budapest, Krakow, Palma, Rzeszow, Salzburg and Valencia. At the same time beach routes will be added to Ibiza, Tenerife and Malaga.
