the gate drones have zero discretion.

Plus, they're on a commission.

Not worth the hassle. And please note that their handbaggage dimensions are specific and unvariable AND smaller than the usual standards. Be careful that the wheels of any bag also fit within the dimensions and into their cage - at security and at the gate. They also weigh hand baggage at certain airports ... I have personal experience of this at Karlsruhe-Baden, and 1 g over the 10 kg is likely to spoil your day.

Don't get caught out. Remember you have to tick that you have read and accept the conditions of carriage before you can buy your ticket. And they are sharp. Razor sharp.

I totally concur. I have never been caught out but I have been at airports and seen it happen. LPL-NOC, MAN-NOC; LPL-SNN etc, etc. It truly is not worth the risk.

They even threaten a 60 pound surcharge if they catch you with an oversize carryon and make you check it at the gate!!!! WOW!! Has this ever happened??

WE'd hate to pay to check our bags since that fee is almost as much as the fare!!

I submit that this is the wrong comparison. You should see whether checking your bags would cost more than flying with another airline.

Essentially, you get what you pay for.

One incident I recall I was flying back from CHQ, an airport in Greece served mostly by budget carriers. A couple of young women (very much DYKWIA types) were having a heated argument at the gate over their excess bags fees with an unsympathetic agent. The ladies had apparently gone airport shopping and had dozens of shopping bags they believed they were entitled to take aboard by virtue of obtaining them in the airport. The agent told them they would have to check each bag, at some exorbitant fee each. The two got quite angry, expressed their position in coarse language and asked to see manager. The agent called security instead who expelled them from the airport. In the commotion, they ended up leaving the shopping bags in the gate area!

And if you are charged an extra fee for breaking a term/condition, the company's official position is that you are "an idiot" for thinking you could get away with it ;)http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...ng-passes.html

If you walk down the Ryanair pier at STN at peak times, you can pretty much be guaranteed a chorus of "£60, cash or card?" as you pass each desk. I've seen some outstations be more lenient, but certainly not enough to count on.

Funnily enough I have flown for years with Ryanair and used the same small rucksack that fits into their cage and never once been asked to weigh it or see if it fits.
In all my travels with them, I've never had my carry on checked or weighed either.

As said above, the rules are pretty clear and simple and easy enough to meet with preparation.

Weighing scales have recently been installed at the gates at some FR stations to facilitate further extortion.

Silver Fox Apr 22, 2013 12:51 pm

Their airline, their rules, doesn't get simpler than that.

You could try one of these ;)

I would like to add my experience (I have flown with them about 50 times now, in countries all over).

In some airports they will check your luggage before security: Beauvais (size), Luton (1 luggage only) and Göteborg (weight)

In some airports they check at the gate: Stansted (at the entrance of the Ryanair terminal, where a lot of their flights leave, they measure the size, not sure about the weight) and Girona (here they were telling people "50€, cash or card?" as they check them at the gate, whilst walking to the plane!)

In some airports they don't really care that much (the smaller ones from my experience)

I have a special backpack that I use to fly with them, it fits the dimensions of their box exactly (sometimes it could be slightly too high, but it fits their box so I have never had a problem there. I have heard of a friend that got charge for having a hand luggage that was too tall in Dublin airport). As this is a backpack they almost never weigh it, this does make life easier.

In the end I would suggest to respect their rules to the letter, if you have a bag with wheels, the chances are very high to be controlled, and they will try to put your luggage in their "box" that fits their maximum size, if it fits you can go, if it doesn't, then you can sometimes repack, or pay.
And if they suspect that you are liable to pay extra for some reason, they will not let you go.

I must say that I have never been charged extra whilst flying with them, even though I sometimes have had overweight luggage (I know that oversize is worst, they more often measure the size that weight, but this depends on the airport).
I have also traveled with a load of stuff on me (up to 10kg a day that I was moving, including clothes, my laptop battery and a couple of books in my pockets), and they would not normally say much (they can't do much really).

They can blow you with jet blast to make sure all that stuff falls out ;)

Ah, the Ryannair,

The reason why the airline is cheap, is because they allow you to carry a very strict ammount of luggage, have a quite "customer is seldomly right" attitude and are known for tricks like cutting down a third of flights from a small country capital if the local government does not grant them exclusive rights. I think you get the picture....their policy is strict, and they do use an opportunity to measure your luggage as a chance to charge any extra weight. However, if you do follow the regulations as described in their site (about the specifics of the luggage size) - you are not going to have any problems whatsoever, aaand, yeah, they do arrive on time.
