World Cup 2018
Starting to plan this with some friends of mine, and so far we are naturally keen on Moscow at St Petersburg as destinations not just for games, but for sightseeing as well.
We are pretty open to suggestions as to where to go with destinations below:
www.fifa.com/worldcup/destination/index.html
Most places I can see will need to be flown, but is for example rail a cheaper alternative?
Keen on places with a lot of history, culture, good food.
Suggestions?

All of the cities can be reached by rail, will take quite some time for the distant ones (Sochi, Ekaterinburg, etc).
I think for most visitors the 1st choice outside of Moscow and SPb should be Kazan.

If I had the same interests as the OP I'd have chosen Volgograd over Sochi any time of day. So we should probably leave it for him to decide
