DME transit (using the 'no-visa' rules)
Hi all
Advice appreciated if possible please. I am looking to do the following... ARR DME on LX at 0155, DEP same day on LX back to Zurich at 0645. Will this be possible at that time of the morning? I need to stay 'in transit' so as to avoid the visa requirement. (in case you are wondering I will be arriving on a paid ticket to commence an award ticket which will take me back via the same route). If transit will be possible at that time of the morning, any other complications anyone can think of? With thanks in advance lme etc etc |
You'll only have about three and half hours of down time between flights. Most shops, pubs, etc... will be closed during your layover. As you're an international transfer on both ends, you should be given a boarding pass for both flights at your initial check in and thusly will not be required to leave the terminal or have to travel to the transit desk. Your bags should be automatically switched/transfered to your ZUR flight without u having to do a thing.
During normal hours you could head up to the second floor outside of terminal A but since you're there during the overnight, you won't find anything there that couldn't be had while inside Terminal A. The only 24 hour service that I can think of that's outside of the Terminal that may of interest to you is the DVD theater outside of Terminal A. It's basically a bunch of open aired cublices that allow you to rent&watch movies. It's not over priced and could kill a few hours for you. 4 hours, overnight in DME .... bring a few items with you to keep you occupied and just take the time to stretch your legs and enjoy being outside of a pressurized aliminum tube for awhile. Bring a electrical converter with you as well incase you want to re/charge something. |

Ok - I definately CAN'T go landside. I haave no visa. But I gather from what you're saying that even at that time of the morning they should have security open to allow me to tansit from arrivals to departures? I don't mind sitting for 3 hours, I just need to make sure I'm not gooing to get off the plane and they say 'sorry - you can't go any further without clearing immigration'. That would be a disaster! Thanks again for your input. |
DME operates 24 hours with no curfew, so transfer facilities should be available. Further information on http://domodedovo.ru/en/main/transfer/info/.
I believe the plane you are arriving with is the same on you'll leave on. In case there would be immigration issues they'd likely put you back on the same plane ... I would just check with LX beforehand to see if they have any issues to let you board the flight to DME without a Russian visa. |

You might read the comments in this forum http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/ameri...scow-visa.html They run the gamit from "it's ok" to problems with boarding without a visa and Russia's failure to see the humor in US citizens flying to their country for 2-3 hours and returning back to the USA. I don't know if any of this would apply to you, but be aware of their comments and advise...
DME has boosted it's image and services over the past years based on it being a major go-between for Asia and Europe. The OP's situation is a very, very common occurance at DME and should experience no other issues other then potential boredom. |
Wow.
Ok. Thanks everyone for the input. I had read the other threads and go the same replies regarding difficulties with visa etc etc. I had asked a question on the star alliance board because I was worried with doing the transit in DME with luggage which would have needed to be tagged: ZRH-DME-FRA-PVG (two separate tickets, one paid from ZRH-DME, the other an award starting in DME) Everyone advised this was avery bad idea and that DME may not manage to do the transfer. And that Swiss might not carry me without visa. And that a delay to the incoming flight could screw up the onward connection... etc etc So... then I looked at the option of a turn-around in DME flying back to Zurich without luggage (I would have stored my luggage at Zurich before boarding the first flight, I'd come off the return ad go pick up my luggage from the locker and check it in for the onwards to PVG). The advice on this board now seems to be that everything would be fairly painless? While I think it may be too late for me to change my plans now - would be interesting to hear whether the bags would have been fine with such a tagging! (may be useful to someone considering the same routing later). |
SQ >> MS Transfer at DME
Morning Everyone --
Trying to get an award ticket booked for a friend and was wondering if anyone knows how easy (or hard) it would be to do a SQ to MS transfer. The routing I'm playing with is IAH -(SQ)- DME -(MS)- CAI -(MS)- ADD. Thanks! :) |
