During the landing or shortly before it (not reported at this time) the airplane caught fire, but managed to land. This is bad. I hope that all passengers and staff got out.

Unconfirmed: the airplane was struck by lightning shortly after takeoff, which led to problems with radio and the crew's decision to return to SVO

Footage is truly chilling, poor souls on board and those who sadly lost their lives.

Im sure this would happen anywhere - not a Russian thing - but not a good look while people in the back burned to death. That said who knows how anyone would behave in this circumstance until it happens to them.

Very sorry to hear about this, because I am an Aeroflot fan and greatly enjoyed flying on that Sukhoi jet (which I did as a WX wetlease for SN between BRU and BSL). CityJet pilots told me that day that they had experienced no end of technical problems with the plane. Swiss German news take:

And the BBC, for completion:

With all due respect, with the best will in the world, the mods might want to remove the Twitter video in the previous post.

30 seconds in - you see a pause in people sliding down, then someone exiting with a bag flailing in hand.

There's the real impact of this. 3 more people could have evaced in that time.

Now reports saying only 37 made it out. If that low, then many may have been quickly overcome by smoke in the back, but makes it amazing the person who shot the video from behind the wing made it out.

There's another cabin video on social from 'Baza' shot from the first class cabin on the other side of the plane.

Never understand why all the safety videos spend so much time on finding exits and - so little on pounding in people's heads they need to leave everything behind.

On board the flight, supposedly:

RT also has CCTV of the landing: https://www.rt.com/news/458448-super...gines-landing/

The aircraft clearly doesn't start burning until the second touchdown - incredible how quickly the fire spreads... Terrifying.

As noted above, anyone exiting with luggage should be held to account - it is inexcusable.

Transpacificflyer May 5, 2019 3:23 pm

I can't get over the idiots with their hand luggage. Truly irresponsible and selfish.
As for the flight deck crew, considering the loss of controls that must have occurred with the fire, this is going to be an interesting investigation. The conditions subsequent to the bounce and crash must have been brutal as the flight deck reportedly used emergency ropes to exit.
