MCT at SVO
I haven't found much up-to-date info about transiting through SVO: I am thinking of TLV-SVO-BCN//WAW-SVO-TLV.
Will have checked luggage, and the connection is 1:45 each way. Should I expect problems ? Chances of luggage going walkies ? Thanks D. |
Hi
If you dont want to visit any lounges and your plane is not late , yes 1h45 minutes is enough You will need to pass immigration even in transit then you can catch your next flight About your checked luggages that is a lottery as always SVO can be a hell of an airport during winter and snow storms , otherwise its cool |
You have time to go to a lounge - easily doable. I've never had issues with lost baggage transiting SVO (maybe FRA can learn from them.)
You do not pass immigration but a security check point. |

There is a passport/boarding pass check at the transit counter before security, but this is not immigration. (In contrast to, for example, connecting at some airports in China or US where you actually enter and exit the country when transfering and need to pay attention to visa requirements).

So far, my (admitedly limited) experience at SVO has been stellar.
I was connecting in a diffeŕent ticket. Just walked to the transfer desk. Two minutes later I was on my way. No border crossing. Obviously, having two tickets I had to have a Russian visa (otherwise I wouldn't have been able to board), but still I was impressed by the efficiency compared to the protracted affair I sometimes faced elsewhere. As long as you are on SU only, I think you will be just fine. |
Just an update - 20 minutes doable provided there is SU ground staff escort. My incoming flight was obscenely delayed and left 30min before the connecting flight departs. At the gate I was met by SU ground crew who rushed me through passport checks, picked up my checked luggage (no thru luggage for MSQ), then ran all the way to Terminal D (mind you, we started in F!). All done in 20 minutes if you run.
But if there's no crew and you don't speak Russian, tough luck. |
SU has a list of all terminal connections, domestic and international combinations, and the minimum connection time with walking directions here:

Hello all,
SU is willing to sell LAX-SVO-LED (1:35 connection) and LED-SVO-LAX (1:20 connection). I know these are legal, but are they realistic? I'm mostly concerned about the LED-SVO-LAX leg since there's only one flight a day to LAX. I do speak Russian, but we will have checked baggage. Thanks FT! |
SU will not same line or interline - FAIR WARNING
This may or may not apply to you, but SU will not same line or interline bags - FAIR WARNING, if you are planning on checking bags on separate tickets
Basically my ticket was JFK-SVO ( ticket 1) Ticket 2 ( purchased separately) was SVO-XXX ( XXX being a destination outside the Russian Federation) Both tickets on SU stock, SU operated, SU flight numbers. My plans changed so I needed up buying two separate tickets. I asked the person who checked me in at JFK to check the bags all the way, and was given a flat NO. Any decent airline worth its salt will be able to do this. Any. I routinely do this on KLM,AF,LH,EK,EY, countless. I got into a bit of a tussle with he station manager at JFK. Despite pleading, SU won't interline bags ( or even sameline for that matter) checked baggage on two separate tickets. I complained to the US regional manager, who then told me the real reason is some stupid RU customs rule ( part of me believes him), but part of me think the real reason is the staff JFK don't know how to do it on Sabre so they basically said it can't be done, and no one wants to do anything out of the ordinary. Since I had a valid russian visa on my passport, I was asked to pick up the baggage at SVO-D and walk all the way to SVO-E before the check in cut off. ( though I was told an exception would be made if I did not have a Russian visa) Imbeciles. I only had basically 45 minutes to do the maneuver. So if you're planning to connect in SVO, take this into account. I am Elite plus with SU, with a long history of flying the airline, since 2009. They did me no favours! |

But on the return journey, where I transfer SU intl - CZ intl on the same ticket, baggage was interlined and sent directly - though I had to collect the CZ boarding pass at SVO transfer desk. |

SU won't interline baggage on an intl - domestic even on the same ticket - which I had to run with all my baggage from F to D at SVO due to a delay of my previous flight leaving only the MCT to connect.

If you are traveling SU-SU on a international to domestic on the same ticket it should be interlined provided you are traveling to an airport that can receive and clear bags. LED is one of them. AER is another. Russia is a big country not all of the airports have the facilities. But if you are going to one of the smaller towns, then no. example New York -> Moscow -> St. Petersburg, Sochi ( Yes) New York -> Moscow -> Mineralye Vody ( No). You need to pick up you bags in Moscow and recheck them again. Usually. |

I am coming up with similar issue. As company only allows pays for my SVO-HKG ticket and I would be in LED before, I am inclining to get LED-SVO ticket.
Do anyone know if they will check-me through? If not I may as well take the LED-SVO train as I will be living next to LED train station and the flight isn't until 7pm ..... |
