Metrojet 7K 9268 (RU) SSH-LED crashes in Sinai, EG (31 Oct 2015)

Egyptian air traffic control lost contact with a civilian airliner carrying 212 people shortly after it took off from the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh to head to Russia, aviation sources said on Saturday.

The sources said the passenger plane was mainly carrying Russian tourists and that a search was underway.

Looks like all is well with this update:

Egypt's air accident chief said on Saturday that a missing passenger plane on its way to Russia had safely left Egyptian airspace and made contact with Turkish air traffic control.

Unfortunately not. The Egyptian Prime Minister has confirmed that the aircraft has gone down in the Sinai.

7K9268 SSH-LED crashes in Sinai, EG

Started with Russian Plane Carrying At Least 200 Passengers ‘Missing’ Over Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula is very nerve-wracking to read then saw Twitter for "russian sinai" shows a lot of bad news including "Egypt confirms Russian passenger plane has crashed in Sinai.

7K (Kogalymavia) SSH(Sharm el-Sheikh)-LED(St. Petersburg-Pulkovo) came up in neither Google Flights nor AlternativeAirlines nor FlightAware (most 7K/KGL flights have no data for 14+days) but I see its Wikipedia article is updated & RT says it's 7K9268 with a FlightRadar link.

Great coverage, all.

Made the duplicate thread "7K9268 SSH-LED Crashes in Sinai, EG but neither saw this before nor did I know how to categorize the such.

The crashed Kolavia A321 plane reportedly had 224 passengers and crew on board. It reportedly had the registration number KGL 9628. Cyprus media are reporting that it rapidly descended shortly before entering Nicosia air traffic control territory. Egyptian military have arrived on the crash scene and say there is no chance of any survivors. There is speculation that it may have been shot down.

The teams who located the plane say it was mangled almost beyond recognition. It would be difficult to imagine anyone surviving the impact, a security officer at the scene told Reuters.

The crash site is reportedly south of El Arish which is on the Mediterranean coast of North Sinai.

Firstly, RIP to those poor souls onboard and my sympathies to those family members and loved ones of those onboard.

Secondly, it could well have been an emergency descent instead of a stall.
