Problem setting up an Uber account - phone number in use
Here is the problem:
My GF's Mom called me last night trying to set up an uber account. She is 84 never downloaded an app before. So I walk her thru that on the phone no problem Finally she gets to the sign up and Uber tells her that her phone number is already in use. Then she remembers to tell me that she set up an account using her computer but never finished the registration, she got to the point of Uber sending her the verification code but isn't that clear what she did next So I have spent the morning searching and all I can come up with is this link Uber email me your problem and we will get back to you link I presume they will just reset her account? IDK - I set mine up way back when and have never had a problem so I'm not familiar with how to get these things fixed. I even joined the Uber forum this morning and couldn't find my answer. Is that her only option or does anyone else have another work around for this particular problem? |
I would first try to sign up as her (with her on the phone so she can tell you if they text her a code or something). If you get stuck, contact Uber.

Set her up with Lyft instead. :D

Can I sign up as her using my phone. Considering that I have an ap and account on my phone? Or would I be doing this on the computer where I sign up as her? I think its the latter. |
I had a similar problem. I needed to update a credit card but I couldn’t sign in as I can’t receive texts to my US cell when I am in Canada. I tried changing the nimber to my Google Voice number but it wouldn’t let me without first receiving the text on the current with the auth code, which I couldn’t do.
I emailed Uber support and they reset it for me and added the new number. So go to the app, click help, then I can’t sign in to my account and send a message with the problem. They will reply by email, which you can then reply to if necessary. |

The "her" in question being the GF's mom... either the Lyft app or a new partner who drives would work. :D

This is what we did and I think after they respond [hopefully with a reset] then I will do what gfunk suggested |

They are not that great, frankly. It took me a couple of back-and-forths before they got it right. And it took a couple of days to respond initially, and only then after I sent another message saying if they didn’t respond, I was deleting the app and going to Lyft.
But it is in the back of my mind I was trying to avoid Lyft as I don't want her to have to pay tips if possible Trying to make this as easy as possible and cashless as possible |
Cant she try and sign in and say she forgot her p/w?
And BTW Uber asks for tips now too.

Kids say that you don't have to tip them, you can but its not a requirement IDK why she didn't do the lost/reset password request |
You don't have to tip the Lyft driver either.
They built it into the app before Uber did, but it's not mandatory. |
Update on the account set-up! Hope it works. I only use lyft but have still have uber on my phone as emergency

I did a follow-up text last night - haven't heard back so I'm not sure whats going on. I have Lyft and Uber set up on my phone but have only used Lyft once. Needed a really early ride to the airport [trip to SFO last summer when we met you LOL] and couldn't get an Uber. Lyft was there quickly so I used it. Great experience but didn't like the tipping aspect of it. Therefore its my backup |
