Did you actually read what happened? It wasn't raised because of surge pricing or 'wealthy area'. The route was altered to be longer in both mileage and time. Thus the rate goes up. Then the driver went the original route because it is faster and had no traffic issues.
Altering the route and charging more when the most direct route is open and clear is what I made the post about. |
Send an e-mail to Uber and request a refund of the difference.
More insidious than the way they monkey with (and hide) surge pricing and more expensive routings IMO is that they quote you a fare up front and then don't always honor it. I have a friend who has multiple times been charged a higher fare than he was initially quoted even though he took the most direct route and there wasn't any additional traffic. An e-mail to customer service usually fixes it, but you have to remember to screenshot the original fare quote because otherwise there's no way to know what the original quote was. I try to avoid Uber and use Juno (in NYC) and Lyft instead. |

Apparently even the more expensive route was cheaper than the alternatives. I don't see the problem. Uber published a fare to take you from A to B, you accepted it and they got you there.
I like Uber and use their services a lot. It was more of a question than to complain. I'll be using them to get home. "Hey it is weird that the route was changed to raise the fare but changing the route wasn't needed". If there was an accident on the direct route and they charged me more. Great.

"Hey it is weird that the route was changed to raise the fare but changing the route wasn't needed". If there was an accident on the direct route and they charged me more. Great. Yah. No screen shot. I'm just pointing out that it was cheap(er than the alternatives), they got you from A to B on time, and by your own account did it faster than they said they would. Given the above, I fail to see a problem here. But hey, FT needs something to complain about, yeah? |

I know of those. Uber denies it but why even show cars if it is 'fake'. They are either there or they are not. If they are there to be 'ghost cars' then they are there to intentionally deceive.
And I was more talking about a change in the route. Which definitely happened in my case. The route was changed with NO need as the route was clear(direct route). I was charged 20% more for no reason. |
Please remember our rules require respectful communication, and that you discuss issues and not other members. I have deleted some posts in this thread that were not in compliance.

The cars driving around is apparently just intended to give a visual representation of driver availability and proximity.

I use Uber and Ubereats a lot. Usually drive to airport but have some calls to make so was going to use Uber, and still did, but noticed something odd. Almost like Uber knows you are looking and likely going to buy a ride and increases prices.
At 1030 I check app and it's 41dollars for VIP and IberX. There are at least 10 cars nearby. Says 7min wait. I want to leave at 11am so I finish packing. Check at 1040 to confirm nothing has changed and 7min wait. Same cars and same price. At 1055 I go to setup and the pricing has jumped to 51 dollars. Same amount of cars. I notice the change has come that the route says to use the bypass around the city adding substantial time and mileage. Check google maps and traffic cams literally no problem going straight there. Why? That seems pretty sketchy to just alter the route which adds almost 20% to the Fare. There are two options:
Yes both are more work but this is the world we live in. As you said it is still convenient and (artificially) cheap. |
Appreciate the more helpful reply. As I originally said I wasn't complaining(I was fine with 51 dollars) but 41 was more reasonable I thought. More so it added mileage and time which increased cost and wasted my time.
Maybe best to screen shot first estimate to have it. Essentially I just want to make sure it's a viable option each time I use it to get to airport. Otherwise I toss the stuff into my car and depart. |
Well, it has finally happened to me today. I was quoted an up-front fare, and they charged me a lot more than that. I did screenshot it, but the imbeciles at their customer service department have tried to tell me that the drop-off location was different (It was not) and that my total was "within the estimate." If I'm quoted an up-front fare, that's all I've agreed to pay.
Don't worry, Uber apologists, I did tip the driver. What a joke. Time to initiate the dispute with Amex. |

They just kept sending me this
Thanks again for letting us know. We're sorry to hear this trip did not meet expectations. We know your time is valuable and we have reviewed this trip to ensure the fare is within our estimate for a trip of this distance. |
