China uber

Anyone else experiencing problems trying to use uber in China? I was just in Shenzhen and when I tried to use uber, the app asked me to confirm my number (The same number from my local country) but it would not send me a sms. I've heard you need a local SIM card, but is there anyway to get around this?

nope - your uber # is your US number. I used it without issues in beijing because i was able to identify the locale via gps and was able to spot the driver, etc.

the cabbies might try and call, but it was overall a failure.

Using a local number is best (easiest just to create a new Uber account) because many drivers like to call you, and might not want to call an international number.

Calling them is also an option.

SMS is not widely used in China anymore, in spite of the fact that Uber lists it as a contact option.

Relying on pin locations can be a futile exercise in crowded areas.
