Warning re: placeholder credit cards

I was having trouble logging in to my American Airlines account today, finally calling rewards network for help. It seems that my account had been closed on January 1st, because the only card attached had not been used for a dine within 36 months. The rep was able to reinstate my account and add the card over the phone, but I wanted to let folks know that according to the terms and conditions, as the rep cited, this is a possibility.

I had dined with AA RN last year with a card that was transferred to another program.
