Insurance that covers missed car rental pick-up

Scenario:
- Flight delay leads to overseas car rental reservation pick-up time being missed by several hours
- Rental company still charges for reservation because it was not canceled ahead of time
- Customer is also obliged to purchase new car rental at 4x the cost of original reservation

Is there any insurance that covers this scenario and prevents the loss of thousands of dollars?

Generally, this sort of thing isn't needed since most, if not all, of the major car rental firms will hold a reservation for the entire day (and often into the next day if your scheduled arrival time is in the evening).

That said, we generally recommend folks schedule their pickup time up to 2 hours later than they think they will arrive at the rental office since picking up early is almost never an issue and it's nice to have that extra buffer and peace of mind.

My reservation is with Europcar. Their T&C state that they only hold reservations for one hour after the reserved pick-up time.

Yeah, that's a pretty customer-unfriendly policy. Europcar is not the best when it comes to those sorts of things. Maybe you can get them to push the pickup time back a few hours? Additionally, most rental companies let you add your flight into to the reservation, and when it's present, they will guarantee to hold the vehicle if your flight is delayed. It's worth asking them.

We may also be able to find you a lower rate with a better company. It's worth tracking your existing Europcar reservation with us and see what comes back.
