One way rental in EU

I am renting in Vienna, Austria and returning the car in Paris, France and the cost comes out to about $1000 for 7 days/nights. The key charge is the one way drop off fee of $500.

Does anybody have better pointers?

That sort of one way fee is what I'd expect for cross border in Europe. The rental company needs to get the car back to the country of registration - hence the steep fee.
Train to Geneva and rent at the airport (French side) would remove the massive one way fee?

Thats a great suggestion I was not aware of this. I did find a couple of them that may work. I may need to change my flight but I will see what I can do. Thank you for suggesting this approach.
