Upgrade with points possible?

I would like to upgrade to a suite with points at a Radisson hotel. Is this possible. I am a golpointsplus Gold Elite member.

It's possible. You have to ask for a instant uppgrade on points. It takes 10 000 points for every level of uppgrade. So if you have booked a Business class room, you would have to pay 10 000 for a Junior suite, and 20 000 for a higher class suite. The amount should correspond to a per night rate. But you could be lucky aswell. I asked for a uppgrade in Lucerne last weekend. Even though i stayed two night they only withdrawed 10 000 points! Could be that the elite status helped me out.

10,000 points for a one level upgrade???

Considering it takes a few stays to earn 10,000 or so points this just confirms that Goldpoints redemptions are poor value for money compared to the IHG earnings and redemptions.

I'm glad I move mine to BA miles.:D:D:D:D

So you are saying that I need to ask for the upgrade at check in, right?

This is funny. I sent an email to the hotel I want to stay in and asked them where I need to ask for the upgrade. They told me I have to go to the goldpoibntplus website.... Of course I did not find anything on the website...

Normaly you ask at the check in. If i were you i would try to send the hotel a e-mail the day before and ask if they have anything available for uppgrade. I have done this 3 times and always had success.(* Berlin, Vienna, Budapest)

It's rather strange though that the 10 000 uppgrade option is not mentioned on the rzgp-website. It was until a year ago. Anyone who has a theory on why?

It's not that bad, I started my holiday with 230,000 points, I've had 4 reward nights and still have 138,000 points left over.

Stays were:

1 night Alesund
2 nights Oslo
1 night Lilliehamer

Jonobigblind Aug 25, 2009 5:55 am

That doesn't sound too bad compared to 10k for an upgrade.

A quick search revealed that my fav hotel in Manchester centre would need 60k per night. Considering how long it would take me to accrue that number of miles I will look further afield for some reward night action.

Does anyone know of any points promotions designed to help boost balances from each stay?

Is the number of points depending on the hotel you stay? Or does it cost all over the group the same to upgrade the room? At SPG the hotels do have different level and at each level it cost different. But also depending on you level.

All I can find is this on the gpp website, in the redeem express awards section:

Redeem some of your Gold Points at the hotel for movies, room upgrades and more.
Awards vary by hotel so be sure to request a list at the hotel front desk when you check in.

Beverage (soda, coffee or tea): 1,000 Gold Points Required
$4 Laundry Credit: 3,000 Gold Points Required
Choice of appetizer or dessert: 8,000 Gold Points Required
Pay TV Movie: 10,000 Gold Points Required
Room upgrade: 10,000 Gold Points Required
Bottle of wine (up to $30 value): 15,000 Gold Points Required
Dinner for two (alcohol not included): 35,000 Gold Points Required

Terms and Conditions
* Express Awards must be requested directly at the hotel.
* Express Awards and their point values vary by hotel and are valid only at participating properties.

I tried to upgrade room in Paris (3 diferent hotels). Everytime staff was suprised and did not know about the offer, and upgrade was not possilble. I call Carlson, but the answer was : "Sorry, they should know about the offer. We can not help you"

In my opinion Carlson is the worst program !

I'm attempting to upgrade with points this weekend in Stockholm. We're staying two nights on a special discount rate - which at the moment I am not even sure will add points to my account since I booked through a different website (because sometimes my brain doesn't work!) but the 2-night rate is good.

I've sent an email to the property but have not heard back yet. I will ask at the desk on check-in. I don't mind spending 10K points on this upgrade, it's a birthday party weekend. But I don't quite have 20K for two nights, so they might decline. I figure it's definitely worth asking.

Did you receive upgrade ?

I will try in Opera Paris next week.

Upgraded room was not available - the hotel was fully booked this weekend.

I even tried to get another room in there for a friend who would be in town, but there was simply nothing left.
And at breakfast, it showed. They had a really hard time keeping up with the plates, flatware and some of the food.

Otherwise - we had a good room with a view over the town, easy to get to and from the hotel from the tram, easy walk to the ferry as well, quiet area. My one and only complaint was the inability to open a window. There did not seem to be airflow in the room and that did affect my sleep a bit. Not much, to be sure, as we were completely exhausted both nights.

Based on the conversation I had with the check-in and check-out people, not only was my notation of arrival time and initial request for a room with a view included in the information on their screens, my email was also included. At check-in, I received an apology for not being able to upgrade this trip, and at check-out, another apology and was questioned as to how our weekend had gone, considering it was for a party.

So, I am pleased with Park Inn Hammarby Sjöstad - even though we were not able to upgrade this time.
