Will you be cancelling your CC Visa?
 

After the massive devaluation, I'm curious to see how many people in the community will be cancelling their CC Visa or not.

On my side, I will be cancelling mine on Monday. Drained all points.

Did you make any Last Night Free bookings in the future? Any confirmation of how those will be treated if you cancel the card before the actual stay?

My last use of points was the week before Memorial day weekend in R. Aruba so I used my points ahead of time to make sure.

A couple things I've found from experience:

1. It appears you can retain the free night benefit for one or more statement cycles after canceling the Visa. Maybe even longer. Although this is moot starting tomorrow when everyone loses it regardless.

2. Reservations already made for the future won't be affected whether or not you retain Gold status or have the Visa. But I wouldn't count on being able to change them.

I won't be cancelling mine. I have looked and there is still some value in the program for me. There are specific redemptions that I am likely to do that are still a good value even with the double devaluation. However I will no longer speculatively generate points on these cards. Any spend will be for a specific purpose where it makes economic sense for me to do it (which will be a lot less going forward though not 0). Thus my/wife's spend on these cards will me much less going forward.

Cancelled today.

No, because I have noted in countless other threads, I have the fee-free Visa card so it costs nothing to have it and I might have future points earning CC stays where I could use it should I wish.

Further, despite what others might proclaim, my having the card for my future speculative bookings of 2 for 1 nights that I have made ensures my being able to keep that benefit whereas others have noted that they still will retain that benefit for those bookings should they ditch the card.

I don't have to worry should those statements prove false as I still will have the card that I made with those 2 for 1 bookings so I should be secure if and when I redeem those bookings.

I have thought about it and I plan on keeping it because I feel the Gold elite status, which provides some value as well as access to 2-for-1 and 4-for-2 EMEA rates off-season, and the annual 40,000 points bonus more than offset the annual fee.

I will however not put any significant spend on the card and use it primarily for (more infrequent going forward) stays at Club Carlson properties.

I received the card just a few days before the "announcement" (great timing, eh?), therefore I'm treating this year as a test run to decide if I want to pay the annual fee when it comes due. I haven't spent much time in CC properties, so I used the points from my sign-up bonus to book speculative stays in the hotels that seem to be considered some of the best in the program (Chicago, Berlin, Vienna), as well as a few cheap paid stays in some other properties that were convenient to places I needed/wanted to be anyway.

I figure that all of these stays should give me a good sense of whether I wish to stay engaged with CC for the long haul, and specifically whether I want to try to hit the 10k spending threshold for the free domestic night. I'm currently leaning towards holding on to the card for the EMEA rates and hitting the 10k spend since I do travel to Chicago and New York frequently enough that I could probably find some value in the free night.

Drained the last of my points an hour ago, and will be canceling the card tomorrow.

I canceled and it was a good decision. the $75 for 40k points is NOT worth since they devalued their points and they don't have many and good properties and Gold benefit from the card is worthless and of course the removal of the bonus award night.

Drained my points for an impromptu 4 night birthday trip to London motivated largely by this deval. Cancelled the card on Friday to get a refund of the annual fee per correspondence with an account specialist when I complained about the deval in April. Oh, well. I was really looking forward to using this card for free nights in Scandinavia.

Have both the personal and business cards, will not be cancelling either. I value a CC point at what I think is a conservative $.003. Thus, the renewal bonus of 40,000 points being worth at least $120 for an annual fee of $60 or $75 depending on which card you have. The upgrades to Business Class are just icing on the cake.

I downgraded to the no fee version. Lose some bonus earnings and the 40,000 annual points but still eligible for the "Earn one free night when you charge $10,000 then renew your Card" with $0 annual fee.

We are keeping the card for the 40K bonus... well worth $75. We have an Atlanta hotel that is 9K points.... and they are good at putting us in a suite... simple as it is.

The free nights we get there more than offset the annual free on the card.
