"Staggering" the Last Free Night
I am traveling with my family and would like to stay at a CC hotel. My wife and I have the credit card which for a few precious weeks still offers the last night free perk. I know I can do the following:
Day 1 -- award night (me)
Day 2 -- free night (me)
Day 3 -- award night (wife)
Day 4 -- free night (wife)
That way we get 4 nights and pay for 2.
Now, could I do the following, booking two rooms?
Day 1 -- Room 1: award night (me); Room 2: none
Day 2 -- Room 1: free night (me); Room 2: award night (wife)
Day 3 -- Room 1: award night (wife); Room 2: free night (wife)
Day 4 -- Room 1: free night (wife); Room 2: award night (me)
Day 5 -- Room 1: none; Room 2: free night (me)
Basically I want to know if I can book 8 nights and pay for 4, but where some of those nights would overlap. My family arrives a day after I do, hence the staggering.
Any other thoughts also welcome!

It looks as though you want your wife to book an award on both day 2 and day 3, thus getting a room free on day 3 and day 4. I do not believe that she can overlap award nights like that.

Thanks - I can see why given the overlap (and rules?) this wouldn't work.
I guess I can simply book 4 nights for me and 4 for her, and then we'll get 2 nights free. So I can't stay 8 nights with 4 free, but I could stay 8 nights with 2 free, which isn't a bad deal.

If you want to stay 8 nights then:
Nights 1 and 2 - You
3-4 - wife
5-6-you
7-8-wife
I starting my stay today for 6 nights - alternating as above. I checked in and let them know I have 3 reservations. I'll let you know if I get any negative response regarding my reservations.

Try keeping Room 1 as you and Room 2 as wife. This might require a room swap at some point, with Room 1 for four days and Room 2 for four days, starting one day later. Day 1 would be Room 1 only and the last day would be Room 2 only.

I was trying to see if I could get 8 nights, 4 free, where there was overlap between the nights. (As majsmom points out, if the 8 nights were consecutive, I could get 4 free just alternating between me and my wife.)

I had something similar (though not so convulsed) at the Radisson Blu in Stavanger, requiring us to check out and in every day. The front desk asked once amusedly "why would you do that?" and nodded understandingly when I said "Carlson promotions"

To book 2 rooms for at least 4 nights don't you need at least 3 account holders?
Like
Day 1 - Room 1: Award Night (A) ---------- Room 2: Award Night (B)
Day 2 - Room 1: Free Night (A) ------------ Room 2: Free Night (B)
Day 3 - Room 1: Award Night (C) ----------- Room 2: Award Night (A)
Day 4 - Room 1: Free Night (C) ------------- Room 2: Free Night (A)
Never mind. It doesn't look it will work. Since Account A holder would be doing two reservations back to back.
