upgrade at the check in or gate
 

last weekend in lisabon and brussel i could only upgrade to bus with miles wit my travelclub gold card and my friends all travelclub couldn´t upgrade because there were no seats in Z class available but lot´s of empty seats so i had to pay with my miles from the gold card on the way back the same problem so i´m running out of miles this way. is there a new rule that travelclub members can not upgrade at the check in counter when there are no seats in Z class ?

What exactly is Z class?

A further comment on the same subject. I recently bought a mileage earning World Special round trip from Geneva to London Heathrow. On the return journey, I upgraded to C-class at check-in at Heathrow, against 5,000 miles. Normally, I should collect 1,000 economy club miles for that trip, but my online statement shows it as Z class "Fare not eligible for mileage accrual". Does upgrading in such a manner take away our right to collect miles according to the fare paid, and what should I do?

This worries me.

I have booked a trip AMS-BSL-BCN in Y class as part of the 240K promotion. I have upgraded to C one way. If I get no points at all for it as a result of using points to upgrade I will not get my 240K!!

It definitely doesn't. Wait until you get your printed statement, and if it still hasn't posted call them or send a fax explaining that you upgraded a PAID fare. You will get Y miles.

I agree with airoli. I´ve upgraded many times on flight to the US and always gotten the miles for the Y ticket. I´m pretty sure they can´t change that quietly without telling us members, even though they also changed the upgrade possibilities....

Yeah, that's right, you just have to call them and explain. Here in de US they are always very helpfull and credit the miles whithin 3 hours our so.

About the point that Medico is making: he is very right. Had to book a flight to Europe yesterday and the American-'Swiss'-lady said that Gold members do not have to wait for Z-class (Y upgraded) seats.

If you show up for checkin AND there are C-seats availabl you can upgrade no matter what. And.... nowadays loooottts of C-seats are avaiable.

Still, as someone posted elsewhere, Qualiflyer administration is one of the most efficient in existence. It surprises me that they should make a mistake like this. Maybe they want us mileage runners to work a bit harder for those miles!!

By the way, sjharte, I am also originally from Scotland, Caithness to be precise. Bit off the Qualiflyer beaten path, but then so is all of Scotland now. No Sabena (or whatever), no Crossair.. I wonder if that is a situation that will change.

The cheapest way to get to an airport served by Qualiflyer ex Scotland is to take Easyjet to Amsterdam. I am doing two mileage runs next month, both ex Amsterdam.

I wish Sabena Mark II would sevre Edinburgh. There used to be three flights a day until the airline died.

I had expected you to use easyJet in order to jump onto the Qualiflyer network. Bear in mind that British Midland run some very good fares to LHR, where I believe there is a good choice of onward flights.

I often used Sabena in and out of EDI from GVA (via BRU), but it still left a long journey up to Caithness. I could never understand why there were such poor ground transportation links to EDI airport, and opted to use GLA instead. But don't get me started on British public transport..

Comparing the cheapest flights, EDI-AMS on EZ is around £35-40 while EDI-LHR on BD is around £60-75.

If I am going to stop over in a third city I'd much rather Amsterdam than London anyday!!!

The Scottish Exceutive have made noises about a rail link to EDI in their latest transport plans.

BAA owns both GLA and EDI and have traditionally favoured GLA. However, there are some signs that the airlines prefer EDI and most new services recently have come East.

Returning to the subject of upgrades, I wonder if last minute upgrades at the gate are disadvantageous. Qualiflyer sells upgrades on a one-way basis only, and that over a miximum of 2 sectors. I am not sure that, if you upgrade at the gate (or check-in; both are last minute), you can upgrade over the two sectors. So if you were going from Lisbon to Hong Kong, you would probably have to upgrade at both stages, paying separately (with miles).

What I experienced at check-in is that you usually upgrade for 2 sectors if they have seats..

But if it is done at the gate it is only for one flight...

I was in MIA with my wife last week and wanted to upgrade to F class... ... at check in as was told the message was in the system and I was going to be called at the gate...

At the gate they in fact gave yours F seats to a CIRCLE member...and with no miles!!!
I m "only" TC Gold member.... So even with last minute upgrade you have to be sometimes at the top of the list.....

But anyway the C class was nice and the food good..
