Cannot figure qcredits upgrades. Can someone help?

Hey everyone.
I have these 60 qcredits. I want to use them before they expire.
I called the customer service and the lady told me "if you want to make sure before you book that you can use them to upgrade, check that there are available award tickets available on the same flight."

Great. I do that, then book my flights. Go to upgrade. Guess what? No upgrade available.

I call them back and ask them what's going on.

They tell me "someone must have booked it". But the award ticket is still available. They basically had no clue whatsoever.

You guys here are very knowledgeable, I'm a noob when it comes to this.

Could you tell me how I can make sure I will be able to upgrade with certainty?

Thanks all

I'm no expert but I don't trust myself to do this online. So recently I called QR, then we found economy flights that had QCredits upgrade availability, then booked the flights with the same agent who then helped me to do the upgrade and confirm that everything was good. A combination of online and manual booking but it worked.

I believe the Qcredit upgrades are only available on those with x1 Avios (normal) award redemption. Those requiring x2 Avios won't be open for Qcredit upgrade, as far as I know, so there aren't many upgrade opportunities considering most award tickets cost x2 Avios now.

Also, we haven't heard any further details about Keys since it was mentioned months ago (which will replace Qcredit at some point) but my guess is that it might be a devaluation in disguise (e.g. open up award ticket availability which we then have to redeem with Avios, rather than a separate 'credit' for upgrade opportunity or purchase of extra baggage as it is now).

That's quite a disappointing "thank you" gift to get those 60 qcredits for reach platinum status then !

I can confirm that upgrades via QCredits or Avios are only available if you can book standard awards (not for 2x the amount). Reduced standard award availability does make the QCredits relatively useless. 😒

Keys is not a devaluation in disguise - it's pretty obvious:
Now: some currency (QCredits) that you can use for upgrades
Future: use keys to unlock availability; other currency (Avios) needs to be spent to redeem upgrades

Still think its kind of a devaluation. A true non-devaluation imho would be like you can use a key to unlock or bring down an X2 award to X1 *and* use a key to upgrade on any (super scarce) X1 flight. And perhaps one could use 2 (or however many) keys to upgrade on an X2 flight. Then, imho it wouldnt be a devaluation.
