By the way regarding a refund, I think Qatar is happy to give you a refund. I think they’d rather give you a refund then actually book you at least that’s been my experience when changing the tickets. The agents are quick to say they’ll give a refund. I think all of this was just a ploy for QR to raise cash during Covid. I’m not sure they actually want people to take these flights that should cost 4-6x the price.

Sure they sold tickets at promotional fares, but it's maybe a stretch to suggest the airline wants to forgo seat-revenue it already holds for potential higher, but very uncertain revenue for that same seat. QR is awkward in its marketing but I'm pretty sure it recognises that a seat's value turns negative once it takes off empty.

Easier explanations for the agent willingness to promote refunds might be that money back is what passengers generally want, and that pressing the refund button is a whole lot easier for the agent than negotiating and implementing the alternatives.

Thanks.

So right now, the outbound flight is $940 as a one-way. And the return is $660 as a one-way. The round-trip prices as $1550.

If booked as a round-trip, and then you fly the outbound, but cancel and refund before flying the return, what would the refund amount be?

Thanks agian.

It will be the total amount paid - non-refundable taxes and fees - value of the outbound.

The return component of the round-trip fare would be calculated by a ticketing specialist and in addition to the return component of the fare, taxes associated with that fare would be refunded.
In this case, the prices of one-way tickets available for the same flights are irrelevant.

Guys, I just called Qatar for a voluntary refund. The agent was pretty helpful and said he processed it.
However, I did not get any confirmation email after that. Is that normal?

I also tried to lookup my reservation after that on Qatar airlines website, and it gets an error.

It gets sent off to the refunds team in Doha which will then have to be processed manually.
You should not get any confirmation email.
ISTFlyer and Wanderwithme like this.

I had the same thing happen. I got my refund within 5 business days.

Agents act as a triage gateway. They make a preliminary assessment, but send the refund request off to be confirmed as refund material, and for the refund amount to be calculated. Making those decisions and calculations is above the agent's pay-scale.

It's helpful when airlines at least acknowledge that a refund request has been submitted: but maybe the concern is that acknowledgement could be interpreted as entitlement, and caution rules the day.

It does take a while from the EMD request being submitted to being converted and issued.
Point of reference: Cancelled reservation online and opted for a voucher. Processing time was 15 days.

I requested a refund via QR call centre on 7th June and still haven’t received a refund. Called on 6th July, 15th July and 21st July for updates and have been told that it’s still in progress and that I need to wait 14-28 days. On all occasions agents have sent an email to the refunds department. Have asked to speak to a manager today and was told there were none available.

Any suggestions on what else to do?

Was it a complex refund? Like a partly used ticket, or a ticket involving other airlines, or a ticket that has been changed several times.

Yeah, it’s a ticket that has been changed a number of times. I still think waiting almost 45 days is a bit excessive! Trying to avoid using S75 if I can. Don’t even know if I can as the credit card I used is now closed.

Did you atleast get an email confirmation of your refund request? The agent told me: 1. Email confirmation within 5 days 2. Refund within 28 days.
