If it did end, this wouldn't mean cancellation of current bookings would it?

Penang folk do quite well with escape routes through regional hubs. As well as KL, they have Singapore and Bangkok, all with full-service carriers and low-costers. Cathay & friends do Hong Kong, and there's LCC to Jakarta. Also direct services to other China destinations.

MH tried PEN LHR, but there simply wasn't demand at the right fare levels to support the route.

Someone here said that Penang is a hot-spot for Gulf tourism. I see no evidence for that, and don't see the other MEA's rushing to follow QR's lead .....

I'm afraid DOH PEN could follow DOH UTP down the pan. Though if QR Towers could drum up some Cardiff Penang passengers they might save TWO routes

Surely they would have to honour current bookings and state that from X date there will be no availability? What is the precedent currently when routes are dropped?

It would, but QR would probably offer a re-route via KUL or BKK (solely due to the excess capacity through the airport).

PEN is precisely as you suggest; an escape route airport for short-haul locations.

I cannot recall seeing any Gulf 'locals' on my flights either to/from PEN, and as I walked around PEN I certainly saw no evidence of it being a major tourism spot for those based in the Middle East.

I have absolutely no grounds to assume this route will disappear, but purely based on passenger numbers, I cannot see how it is sustainable.

I am booked on this fare at the end of Feb, and was slightly alarmed to see the comments about the route not surviving. But actually going to KUL or SIN instead would be a pretty good alternative.

Just a quick plea to anyone on a Satay fare... Don't go to the beach, or expect great 5* hotels - you'll be disappointed. But do visit old Georgetown and the UNESCO World Heritage Site and look around (instagram.com/p/Bpv-rNsAPp0/). I haven't been to the city centre for years, and I was really impressed at how the centre has been regenerated and preserved (the E&O not so much...). And the street food really is as good as everyone says.

By which time there's a real possibility it'll be back to a B787 knowing how often QR change them.

Malaysia is generally very popular with Arabs as it is an Islamic country with very easy access to halal food (and booze for those who want it).
However, with the blockade, you're not going to see many Saudis on the route.

Honestly mate, I don't think this was a dig at Cardiff itself, but the load factor on the CWL-DOH route.

As has been said, it's not a dig at CWL, but the low loads speak for themselves.

I dare say QR did a decent deal with CWL airport management, but the pricing just isn't attractive enough to encourage the loads to favour CWL over LHR/LGW/BHX...and I don't believe there is enough local CWL demand to satisfy the route alone.
