Is SFO still appearing? That has also quietly been removed from planned service.

As for whats next, the only US addition planned for the next 3 years is DTW. (I’ll be long gone by the time this would start) Which really will not rely on India traffic, which all other US flights do. But given how financially strapped we are, I can’t see DTW starting, being announced, probably.

Back in November, these flights were on the A350 when I booked my tickets for May 2018. I discovered the change yesterday and that made me really sad.

I guess you've learned your lesson the hard way! Never book QR in expectation of a specific type of aircraft. They make so many changes it's unreal, even just weeks ahead of travel.

I remember a couple of years back they made a big thing about operating the DOH-CMB route with the 787. I think this was splashed across the Sri Lanka home page on the QR website for a number of weeks. Then the timetable reverted back to their older 777/A330/A340 aircraft. In fact (I may be wrong) but I don't think any flights were actually operated by the 787 on this route on a regular basis.

From routesonline:

Qatar Airways in last week’s schedule update filed expanded service on Doha – Bangkok route, as the airline lists 6th daily flight, from 25MAR18. For the moment, the new addition is QR980/981, on board Boeing 787-8 aircraft. Further changes to operational frequency on this route remains likely.

QR981 BKK2035 – 2345DOH 788 D

I hear you on that, but the good news is that QR are actually maintaining the four weekly-flights through the summer-season, and have loaded them onto the booking-engine, also that they're coming back with the A332 for next winter-season ! That's real progress !

The pricing seems reasonable, the offer (via the BA-website using code-shares) of very-cheap flights in November (after the switch to the bigger aircraft) is also intelligent marketing, and I'm telling all my local friends !

OK it's only the A319LR, and it stops in RGN inbound, but maintaining the new route year-round should help them build numbers & get established, and we can perhaps hope for a larger aircraft (A320 or eventually wide-body year-round ?) direct if there is sufficient demand ? This really is our best-and-only hope of long-haul connections west-bound out of Chiang Mai, and we've waited a long time for it, so I very much hope it succeeds for them !

Perhaps one aircraft might do the Chiang Mai & Utapao-routes eventually, with three or four flights each week meaning efficient daily-utilitisation of the aircraft, every day of the week ?

Personally I've just booked four returns on the new route, would have been five, except that I'd already bought my tickets via-Bangkok several months ago for my end-January trip. Avoiding the time & delay, of flying via Bangkok is a real benefit for me, doing Immigration & clearing Customs in Chiang Mai will also be much quicker for us !

If anybody in Doha Head-Office is listening, then the slightly-later arrival/departure-times in summer are a significant improvement too, as landing here at 06.00 & departing 07.10 in-winter will mean a very-early start-from-home & check-in for both local-expats and visiting-tourists too, they're who I expect will be the main people using the new route, visiting 'The Rose of the North' !

Wonder if the 6th flight QR980/981 will continue or not.

Would love an A350 on this route if the A380 is no longer scheduled.
