Saw an article in a UK business paper. The highlights:
From May to October 2019, 50,000 passengers used the route which is up 13.5% on 2018.
52% of passengers originate in the UK and 48% overseas. A shock for me is that 18% of the UK passengers are from England when the airport gets 95% of its UK users from Wales.
11% of the passengers use the route for Business and 89% for leisure.
The most popular final destinations from Cardiff
11% Doha
10% Bangkok
6% Sydney and Perth,
4% Bali
3% Kuwait, Lahore, Kuala Lumpur and Armistar.
According to QR, after 18 months the figures are encouraging, the route is maturing well compared to Birmingham and it is on track for it's 4 year maturity level.

Yeah me too. I’m pretty much the only one who doesn’t go towards transfers (so much so that even the staff think I’ve gone the wrong way by mistake and chase after me!)
Even when I have family or friends visiting they say the same.
Regarding the cargo side I’ve noticed a lot more Welsh made products in the shops. Yesterday I bought Welsh cheese and mince pies! Today in Monoprix I saw they had lots of Welsh lamb on sale.

I'm told there's quite a Qarati student community in the region, a core element of it with strong pedigree I doubt that students and any visiting families and friends make up the day-in, day-out passenger numbers, but they raised the CWL profile among potential targets when new routes were considered.
Now, what about East Midlands ?

Haven't done the Cardiff figures for a few months.
It appears that 2019 was a fairly successful year for the route with just over 90,000 using the route.
In October, 7387 passengers used the route which was up 27% on last year. That makes an average of 168 per flight or a LF of 66%.
In November, 6486 passengers used the route which was up 24% on last year. That makes an average of 147 per flight or a LF of 58%.
In December, 8391 passengers used the route which was up 30% on last year. That makes an average of 191 per flight or a LF of 75%
It looks like the route is becoming more established with some pretty impressive growth after the low growth seen during the summer (but with much higher LFs). The 'slow-season' figures are still pretty poor, but summer and Christmas seem pretty decent.
2019 hasn't been the best of years for Cardiff Airport. Let's hope for a better 2020.
