I am thinking that those who claimed of receiving $800-$1000 offers have probably booked a higher fare class originally. Apparently, W is one of the lowest, if not the lowest, of all QR fae classes. Could that be the reason why the upgrade offer for this class is in the neighborhood of $1500?

My connecting flight is about 4 hours as well and I got the same $390 as you.

I should have said "seemingly correlated". Though that said, having checked the wiki, I see that the prices offered are higher from lower fare classes (O, T, W) than more flexible fare classes (M, B etc).
Despite that, there isn't enough data points in the wiki. But afaik, as a general rule among most airlines, lower fare classes are often offered higher prices for upgrades (understandably).

does Qatar allow passengers on an economy ticket to purchase an upgrade to business class if there are seats available at check-in or at the gate for cash? If so, what is the usual price? (JFK or IAD to Doha)

HEL-DOH, Y to J 545€, N-class. If it would be better equipment than A332, I might be remotely interested, but now I'm thinking that I'll pass it.

If I only traveled by myself I might accept the DOH-MAN offer since it is Q-suite. But in fact I travel with my wife so that will be over budget. And we prefer economy since there is less "hardware" barrier

I can understand why an accountant-led business might want to charge more, for an upgrade to Business from a lower-class of Economy, but I don't necessarily agree (despite being an accountant myself !).
The passenger is paying for an upgrade from Economy-comfort to Business-comfort, and this is a Last-Chance for the airline to gain some extra money/profit, by filling an empty Business-seat ... so it's a marketing/commercial-decision IMO. And the actual marginal-cost to the airline of the upgrade is relatively-trivial at that point.
The price should be set to maximise revenue/profit on the fixed-cost of operating the flight, with the caveat that it mustn't ever cheapen the allure of Business, or induce passengers to book Economy in-the-expectation of being then able to reliably get a cheap upgrade before-boarding.
The problem being that, given the blockade & low-season load-factors, there is a very good chance that there will be empty seats in J these days !

The problem being that, given the blockade & low-season load-factors, there is a very good chance that there will be empty seats in J these days !

It's a difficult balance to strike. I'm sure QR has looked at it from all angles. Bare in mind that we, as FTers, are not representative of the general flying public. We are far more inclined to pay for UGs than your average pax.
Paid UGs were tempting to me maybe 40% of the time on long haul flights, now prices are higher and the lounge access is no longer part of the deal and that's well under 10% now. This is just one person, so not a significant data point. QR would have a far better picture with all the data on hand.

Any chance upgrades from J to F are offered on my A380 BKK-DOH flight? 7/8 F seats are empty at the moment and flight is next week.

I was offered one at online check-in last weekend, BKK-DOH J to F for OMR 405 (GBP 810). I didn't partake.
