Just wanted to confirm something: I recall that there were flat rates for 'Upgrades with Cash' at the airport for flights out of Doha for certain sectors on the day of the flight. In transit, one could do this from the designated counters in the transit hall, where you could pay and upgrade, subject to availability. I was remembering that I was once told the flat rate was $500 to SE Asia from Doha and $800 to North America. Does this ring true? Anyone with recent experience of doing this in transit for a DOH-USA flight for $800 or does it vary? Thanks in advance.

In December, upgrades to the US were available at the airport for USD850. The desk is under the overhang to the right if you’re facing the teddy bear.
They open up sales of upgrades exactly 3 hours before flight time. The day I bought mine there were 2 upgrades up for grabs and one man got there before me. If you are there before the 3-hour mark, it’s worth making yourself known at the desk in case others are also wanting to upgrade on your flight, but they can’t exactly hold it for you if you’re not there when they open the flight.
They open up sales of upgrades exactly 3 hours before flight time. The day I bought mine there were 2 upgrades up for grabs and one man got there before me. If you are there before the 3-hour mark, it’s worth making yourself known at the desk in case others are also wanting to upgrade on your flight, but they can’t exactly hold it for you if you’re not there when they open the flight.

Interesting. So in a rational world, if they're selling last minute upgrades, one might guess that there would be some mileage award/redemption J seats available before day of departure.

Thanks for the information and the tip RSDoha ! Very helpful. It might have been $850 the last time I checked in September as well.
In terms of availability of J seats, I think Qatar makes it known (at least when I call the PC priority line) that they will hold seats for as long as possible for revenue, especially on popular routes, hence making the online or phone upgrade (or award redemption for that matter) impossible to get. Interesting that they open up the cash upgrades just three hours before the flight, as they don't have this 3 hour limitation for airport Qmiles/ Qcredit upgrades. I have done upgrades to J with miles or credits multiple times at the very beginning of an 8 hour layover. Wouldn't it make sense for them to open up cash upgrades on the day of the flight since this would be real money in their hands? Its almost like Qatar is giving first dibs to those with Qmiles or Qcredits! I'm not sure if it is still rational from Qatar's standpoint...

Hi Everyone, my first post here.
Took the SIN > DOH on 17/02/2018 QR947, received check in upgrade for SGD 849 and DOH > JFK on 18/02/2018 QR703, didn't receive any upgrade offer but I went to the upgrade counter on the transfer hall and was quoted USD 1,020. I saw some earlier post quoting USD 850 within the past few months hence seeking opinion from fellow bros and sis if there was any recent price changes to this leg.
Both legs are booked on O class fare.
I haven't received any email on upgrade for my return journey yet, will keep you guys updated again.

How will you sleep on it if offered at check in lol ? Or do you mean online check in as opposed to airport check in ?
These sort of cash upgrades are usually offered on a per sector basis only ?
If say the upgrade was for cdg-doh only would you still get al-safwa access based on inbound flight to doh being >5 hours and in F even though onward journey to syd is J ?

The bottom line is that your lounge access is based on your original, not upgraded ticket. That said, there are some indications that the policy is a bit of a moving target, so no harm in trying.

Hi everyone
Another data point for you - for past two weeks I had called each day to request an upgrade using Qmiles on QR703 from DOH-->JFK. Each day got the "we're sorry it's not available" reply. Got to DOH and went to the Cash Upgrade desk 3 hours and 10 mins before my flight and the very nice staff there shared there were 6 seats for cash upgrade for $1020 each. She said in past few weeks - all available upgrade seats sold out in first 60-90 mins of availability. I grabbed one - and was very grateful for 14 hours in the front as the back was completely full.

Ah sorry my bad just met I checked in 48hrs ahead of departure and it came up with the offer - interestingly I fly this afternoon and the offer is still showing in my app as available
