Any updates on Qatar flying to Lusaka? It was mentioned once or twice but nothing lately. Still on the agenda? Hoping to have an alternative to Emirates or South African for our safari next summer.

Qatar Airways yesterday opened reservation for its new destination in Malaysia, previously not announced by the oneWorld member. From 06FEB18, Penang will join the carrier’s network as it begins Doha – Penang route, on board Boeing 787-8. Service will be 3 times a week.

Looks like Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays are the three days of the week for this flight.

Only bookable up until the end of March right now.

Penang! Penang! There used to be a twice weekly LHR-PEN non-stop on MH, but this is amazing news. Amazing in that I had heard not one peep about it.

This is great news for me personally. I'm in Penang now, at the E&O. I probably come here 4 to six times a year for work. I've used QR to get here quite a bit already, but it's a bit of a faff changing twice. Flight times are very convenient, shame it's only 3 times per week. Hopefully demand will be strong, and the route goes daily.

OT - has the electronics ban been lifted using QR from DOH to LHR?

Nice place for work to put you! Last time I was there they were just finishing off the new wing so will have a little peak at some point. Loved Penang in my younger days - good party scene, albeit some places used to get a little hairy...

I'm in the new wing. I prefer the old! It's a great hotel, but I'm lucky that I can chose where I stay within a certain limit.

Back on topic, I'm hoping to book one of the first trips out of Penang in February, just before Chinese New Year. Could be very convenient. I haven't flown QR all this year!

If EK (I think) couldn't make it work, QR definitely wont be able to!

FWIW, I believe that it was regulatory problems, not economic ones, which killed the route.

Ah interesting. I always assumed it was down to low demand, albeit the routing was designed as a trade deal between the two countries.

I wonder whether those same issues, would hit QR too.

Demand is fine if you can fix regional distribution with partners. Not so easy for EK or QR, particularly as QR is something of a lame duck at the moment

I'm always surprised how full TK is on PTY IST, though of course it is well integrated with its alliance partner there.
