No show fee ?

I called to make a BKK-IAD reservation for 12/2016. The agent was telling me the fees (J ticket) and I asked what the no show fee was. He said that if I didn't check in 3 hours before departure then I was consider a no show and my flights would be canceled. Then I would have to pay the $500 no show fee + the fare difference. He said that I may not be able to check in online and that the airport counters opened 3-4 hours before departure. I asked that only gives a small window for 300+ people to check in. he didn't have an answer for that. I didn't book the ticket yet.

Can anyone shed their experiences with the 3 hour check in requirement. I am always 2 to 2 1/2 hours early and 3 is no big deal but I am concerned about things out of my control like an auto accident that ties up traffic.

Thanks

That sounds like a lot of things would need to go wrong all at once !

I've flown out of BKK on QR a few times and check-in does not close 3 hrs before departure. It may open 3 hrs before, but it closes probably 45-60 mins before. And there are separate desks for first, business and online bag drop.

Yes, there's a slim chance online check-in may be down, but it opens 36 hrs before departure, so it would have to be down a for long time. And delays getting to the airport ? That's what travel insurance is for.

Check the specific fare rule, but no-show fees are usually chargeable if you fail to cancel one hour before departure. Sure, you'd need to pay the change fee and any fare difference, but the no-show fee is avoidable unless you're really sick, etc. Running late ? Call from the taxi.

If you don't change your flight 3 h before the departure time and you don't take that flight.. There is then a non show penalty....usually you can do the check-in 1h before your flight without any problem

That is what I thought but the agent was insistent that I had to check-in 3 hours before. We always do online check-in if available and it usually is. If online check-in wasn't available I didn't want to get to the airport 2 1/2 hours before my flight and be told my ticket was canceled. I will verify with another agent then book my ticket.

Pretty sure you only get charged this fee if you attempt to actually rebook or refund the flight between T-3 hours and take-off. I've never been charged for simply not showing up for a flight.

That's correct. The fee is collected when you rebook, in addition to the change fee and any fare increase. Unless you just let the return half expire.

I find QR pretty flexible. If I need an 'open return', I just book a cheap round trip ticket and cancel the return flight once I've arrived. They are happy to leave it 'open' and I pay the change fee when I finalise the return date.

I have. I missed a flight out of DOH once and had to pay the no-show fee in addition to the change fee to rebook a later one.

This stands true for every airline, right? Definitely don't want to be suddenly charged for missing a segment.

According to QR rules, they take the highest of Change/Refund and No Show fee, not both :

NO-SHOW
A PASSENGER FAILS TO CHANGE/CANCEL HIS/HER
RESERVATION 3 HOURS PRIOR TO DEPARTURE ANY RE-
BOOKING MADE WITHIN 3 HOURS PRIOR TO
DEPARTURE OR AFTER DEPARTURE OF FLIGHT AS SHOWN
IN THE E-TICKET WILL BE CONSIDERED AS A NO-SHOW.
--------------------------------------------------
FOR A SCENARIO WHERE IN THE ORIGINAL RESERVATION
IS CANCELLED PRIOR TO NO-SHOW CONDITION BUT THE
NEW RESERVATION ARE MADE AFTER DEPARTURE OF THE
FLIGHT AS MENTIONED IN E- TICKET COUPON
RESERVATION AND TICKETING STAFF MAY PERFORM A
MANUAL TRANSACTION WITHOUT ATC ENTRIES TO AVOID
THE COLLECTION OF NO-SHOW FEE
-------------------------------------------------
CHANGES AGAINST NO SHOW
- IN CASE OF NO-SHOW ONLY ONE FEE IS TO BE CHARGED
I.E. EITHER THE NO-SHOW FEE OR THE
REISSUE/REVALIDATION FEE WHICHEVER IS HIGHER AND
NOT BOTH.
--------------------------------------------------
CANCELLATION / REFUNDS AGAINST NO SHOW
- IN CASE OF NO-SHOW ONLY ONE FEE IS TO BE CHARGED
I.E. EITHER THE NO-SHOW FEE OR THE
CANCELLATION/REFUND FEE WHICHEVER IS HIGHER AND
NOT BOTH.
If you intend to miss the last leg of your trip, you have to take into consideration that recent addition to the rules :
PASSENGER SELF OFFLOAD DECISION REFUSAL OF
FURTHER TRANSPORTATION
IF AFTER CHECK-IN YOU AND OR ANY PASSENGER
ACCOMPANYING YOU DECIDE NOT TO TRAVEL ON A QATAR
AIRWAYS SERVICE WITHOUT A VALID REASON AND INFORM
US LESS THAN THREE HOURS PRIOR TO THE FLIGHT
DEPARTURE THEN THE FOLLOWING WILL APPLY
A. IF THERE IS A FLIGHT DELAY AS A RESULT OF YOUR
DECISION THEN WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO RECOVER
FROM YOU ANY AND ALL DIRECT COSTS INCURRED DUE TO
DISRUPTED OPERATIONS WHICH INCLUDE REMOVAL OF
YOUR BAGGAGE FLIGHT DELAY DISRUPTIONS AND
MISCONNECTIONS OF OTHER PASSENGERS. IN ADDITION
WE WILL CANCEL YOUR ENTIRE TICKET FOR ANY FURTHER
TRANSPORTATION WITH NO REFUNDS.
B. IF YOU INFORM US BETWEEN 3 TO 2 HOURS PRIOR
FLIGHT DEPARTURE TO OFFLOAD YOURSELF ON THE
BOOKED FLIGHT S AND IF THIS DOES NOT RESULT IN
ANY FLIGHT DELAY DISRUPTIONS OR INCONVENIENCE TO
OTHER PASSENGERS THEN WE MAY PERMIT CHANGES TO
YOUR TICKET BASED ON THE APPLICABLE FARE RULES. A
CHARGE WILL HOWEVER APPLY WHICH WILL BE EITHER
THE NO-SHOW FEE OF THE RESPECTIVE FARE TYPE OR
USD 150 WHICHEVER IS HIGHER
