Checked Baggage Rules (codeshare)
Hi,
I'm considering booking a flight from Toronto (YYZ) to Amritsar (ATQ), and the flight seems to go from Toronto to JFK through American Airlines, and then Qatar Airways from there to Doha and then to ATQ. According to the Qatar Airways webpage, it says that the first airline's rules apply for Canadian origin or destination flights. Does that mean that even though I am buying a single ticket, I'd be allowed 0 checked baggage free (as per American Airlines rules) for an international journey? The CS rep when I called Qatar said that Qatar's rules should apply so I should get 2 checked bags but somehow I think she may be wrong. Any advice? Thanks. |
Because this ticket includes the US (JFK), DOT rules apply. Those rules require that the baggage allowance for the marketing carrier of the first segment applies to the entire ticket. Thus, AA's rules.

But is AA not the OPERATING carrier, as opposed to marketing carrier? Since Qatar Airways is the one marketing the whole journey.

The DOT rule is specific. MARKETING carrier of the first segment. I am presuming that to be AA in this instance. If it is other than AA, then the rules for that marketing carrier.
We've decided to just book from YYZ-LHR-DOH-ATQ instead. Just a tab bit more expensive, 2 checked baggage and it avoids the hassles at US customs. :) |
AA has filed the following (remember that AA does not fly to ATQ or anywhere in IN):
Code:
BAG ALLOWANCE -YYZATQ-02P/AA/EACH PIECE UP TO 50 POUNDS/23 Indeed the AA allowance (which is both the marketing and the operating carrier of the first segment) apply for the entire journey, even though QR is the validating carrier. |
