13-13-13 (or 01-13-14) is a good guess. The target was 11-11-11 before that.

Back in 2004 Al Baker promissed opening in 2008.... at a cost of $2 billion. And we are in 2013 at a cost of $17,5 billion and still waiting! Thats what i call goooood project management.
I am still missing Al Baker's public bashing on this one like he regularly does with his aircraft suppliers...double standards

So 1st April will be the opening date...I hope it will not turn out to be a day of joke...

12 airlines will move first, and the rest follows later. Wonder if BA will be among the 12 'first' users.

haha... the planes will land, passengers unload, then Al-Baker will greet everyone: "April Fools"! Now go back to the old airport... the lounges aren't ready yet!

I just spoke to the very friendly (and not too bad-looking) Al-Maha lady who escorted me past 4 busloads of people through security here at DOH, and into Oryx, and she said that they will start moving all of the equipment the short hop from DOH to NDIA in July, and that the first operations will commence in August. She hopes, she added. ;-)

I've been wanting to check out the new route to WAW but might have to put that off until the new airport is up and running.

Is it still true that apart from the lounges you cannot get a drink (alcohol) at any of the F&B outlets?

Yes. We assume (and hope) that that will change in the new airport, but I don't think that we have any certain indication, do we? I haven't seen any list of F&B outlets.

I would rather assume the opposite, and view it as a rather big surprise if alcohol turns out to be freely available. The fact that nothing has been said on this topic anywhere that I've seen indicates that there is no change coming for now.

But we'll see soon enough I guess.

Qatar Airways group actually owns the alcohol distribution company here in Qatar. So all alcohol purchased in Qatar must go through QR alcohol distribution company.

I'm acutally surprised that alcohol is not offered in the airport since QR has a monopoly and could make easy money. It just another thing with QR that makes me go hummmmmm

It probably has something to do with the laws of Qatar itself. You can not bring alcohol into the country, and only visiting foreigners can buy only get beer/wine/drinks at hotel bars.

Oh, the timing of it all.
I'm doing a "J to F" transit, June 18 and a "J to J" transit, June 29. I would of loved to see how all those $$ got spent. Next year may be.
I suppose the upside is, that there is bound to be chaos for the first month or so.
I'll let you local FF's iron the bugs out for me.

It doesn't seem to be the laws, as alcohol is available now in the Oryx lounge and the Qatar Airways premium terminal.

I assume that they don't sell alcohol in the current airport because there's no venue very conducive to it -- only the fast-food counter and cafeteria-style eatery at the other end. They probably would want a more upscale, discreet location, which presumably would be available in the new airport.

It's also possible that the current concessionaire, Sterling Restaurants I think, is opposed to alcohol as a management policy (that is common in Qatar, even in places where it would be allowed) or lack of vision (also common in Qatar).
