Sorry. Air New Zealand is adding extra flights to Queenstown, not QANTAS. See this post. I'd expect that QANTAS will soon have the capacity to do so, but probably won't.

The Classic Award booking engine is absolutely hopeless in trying to book this routing!

Would really like to do this, but for me, it would be foolhardy, spendthrift, and a totally unjustifiable and ridiculous jaunt. So I might do it!

Disclaimer:
There is a fair emphasis on the *might* as I will be doing AKL-CHC-AKL in April anyway, but of course, would be a much better trip with company. And I've never had the pleasure of landing at WLG.

Decisions, decisions...

When I called to book this, the girl at QF asked if I was sure I wanted those connections. She said that it "all seemed very quick"... I had to hold in my somewhat dubious response to that

Yes, according to this article:

Qantas subsidiary and budget airline Jetstar's domestic launch in New Zealand - offering seats for possibly 30% more passengers into Queenstown - is expected to prompt a domestic price war in the months ahead.

Jetstar is not only upgrading its navigational software to include the crucial RNP (Required Navigational Performance) system to allow it to compete with Air New Zealand to get in and out of Queenstown in inclement weather, but is now also considering flights to Dunedin International Airport, which last week lost some Air New Zealand capacity.

It was introducing the RNP system Qantas did not have to counter low-visibility problems, the Airbus A320's increased 41-seat capacity could be a "great boost" and Jetstar's business model was suited to the economic times.

The RNP navigational system would be installed between September and December this year, specifically for use at Queenstown airport, and all aircraft would be RNP-capable by the end of the year, he said.
At least there are some benefits for flying into Queenstown on Jetstar.

And a pleasure it can be in a strong cross wind off the straight. When I lived in Wellington 1 night ended up in Auckand after the 737 from CHC missed 2 aproaches. Also been to Blenhiem in an F27 from Napier to WLG. Pilot did not even try

F27 - that is a while back. A number of times on F27 between WLG and NSN we'd go via BHE to pick up/drop off pax on other cancelled flights.

At the moment there is only 1 flight a day between CHC and ZQN and there used to be 3 or 4 a day, not sure about AKL - ZQN but as it stands this would be a drop in flights not an increase.

I wonder if PAX will have to pay a RPN surcharge if the flight has to use RPN like Avis ZQN now charge for snowchains ($15 per day of use)?

Thanks for this. I guess it's going to make getting to ZQN on QF rather difficult during the summer months on RTW fares.

The Jetstar A320's will seat 177 in economy, in 29.5 rows of 3x3.

Jetconnect only seat 130 in economy on the 737-300 or 126 in 737-400 according to wikipedia.

From the article I mentioned before:
While only replacing Qantas' existing domestic service and offering slightly fewer weekly flights, at 84, Jetstar will increase passenger capacity by more than 40% on some routes such as Queenstown, which will benefit from a 29% increase of weekly seats from 1920 at present to 2478, with three flights a day.
177 seats / plane * 2 flights a day * 7 days / week = 2478 seats / week

I didn't see this until after the sale was over:

New domestic airline Jetstar is offering $5 one-way website fares from 8am to 11am on Friday.

The offer is for flights between October 15 and December 15 and conditions apply.
