Help! J on QF74 (in a 747) or Y on A380 (QF12)?

Hi,

I know the question may seem a little silly, but I'm currently booked on points in Y class on QF12 LAX to SYD on January 25, on the A380. A seat just came up in Business class out of SF on QF74 for January 24 and 25 but it's on the 747-Boeing.

According to QF customer service, the A380 Y class is "amazing"...And I know that the 747's in business don't have lie flat beds anyway.

Is it worth the extra points to take the business class seat on the 747?

I also heard something about QF's the "Ugly Sisters" planes...is that something I need to worry about here?

I'm flying from NYC on a separate ticket (which I haven't bought yet) so I don't care about which North American city I depart from but I have to make up my mind ASAP.

Help, please? Many thanks in advance.

J on a QF 747 is better than Y on an QF A380.
QF customer service may say the A380 Y class is "amazing" but it ain't J.
Go for J if you can and have the extra points/miles

The Y seat may be amazing, but after 14 hrs you might be homicidal. Go for J - don't even think anout the Y seat.

The 3 ugly sisters are perfectly OK. If they weren't they would have crashed long ago.

If you are flying from NYC, try the QF 108 service JFK-LAX-SYD.

Another vote for J on the 744, which does have a lay flat bed, just not 180 flat. The A380 is just another big plane, I wouldn't go out of my way for it, especially not in Y (but perhaps in Premium Y if I wasn't paying for the ticket and couldn't fly J).

You will not be able to tell the difference between the "Ugly Sisters" an other QF 744 or 744Er aircraft unless you really know where to look. Can you tell the difference between a RR RB211-524H/T and a GE CF6- 80C2B1F engine on a 744 hull? This is the only real difference now.

When QF first took delivery of VH-OEB, VH-OEC and VH-OED back in 1998, their cabin fitout was different to the rest of the QF 744 fleet and considered to be inferior. However, they have been completely re-fitted and the interiors are the same as the other Pacific Fleet 744s.

To differentiate between an Ugly Sister and an ER, does one need to be able to tell the difference between a CF6-80C2B1F and a CF6-80C2B5F? Or is there a simpler way?

The ER's have ER written after the 747-400 on both sides of the plane. If you have a non ER plane with GE engines then you are on a ugly sister. An easy way to remember what kind of engine the aircraft has:
GE = white engines
RR= gray engines

GE minus ER equals ugly

And that is your math lesson for the weekend!

Business is business and much better than economy, especially on a long flight.

BTW some who have tried A380 Y dislike it as the new seat design doesn't work well if you are tall.

Logical What!

Also, if you can see the aircraft's registration or name the following identify the "Ugly Sisters":
  • VH-OEB - "Phillip Island"
  • VH-OEC - "King Island"
  • VH-OED - "Kangaroo Island"
